Interesting to see how this works out. We'll have Sudan back in the Empire yet, huzzah!

I particularly liked this bit, very Graham Greene...
I met the new British Council director in his office - in the grounds of a notorious nightclub (the club had free office space, and in Juba you take what you get).

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

It's an excellent decision. Surprisingly far-sighted.
Not only will it work against tribalism, it's the best tool possible for improving the educational standards.
In a country with a shortage of books, the internet is THE tool for learning, and English is THE language of the internet.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Nice to see Blighty in there, trying to win influence in a new nation. Obviously, the Chinese will steamroller in soon, offering to build the South Sudanese a giant platinum ostrich in return for voting compliance at the UN but you do what you can.

I'm fully with mastermack on this one - if you're going to pick a language to bind the nation together, and give them an outward look to the international stage then
Shakespeare's language is the one...whether it be English English or the Americanised version

Go Sudan!
