Taking guns off loonies is fine.
Fuck you no it isn't.
Define 'loonies' and maybe you can gain my agreement, but a friend of mine, who has a diagnosis of schizophrenia, is welcome to have a loaded gun in my camp, behind me.
Someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness that the legislature has determined effects his ability to safely own, maintain and use a firearm.

He is no more likely to attack me with a gun than he is to attack me with a kitchen knife. Neither needs to be taken away from him.
If he has psychotic episodes, I don't see how that could be true, or if he was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic involving an inability to distinguish right from wrong or reality for fantasy, then it might be a problem.
I've got a cousin who is a paranoid schizophrenic. With medication, his delusions are completely controlled and he lives on his own and has a job and takes care of himself. Even without medication, he doesn't have violent delusions or behavior. His delusions used to lead him to do shit like burying things in the yard so no one could find it, then digging it up because a helicopter watched him hide it.
He's never been involuntarily committed, never shown himself to be a danger to himself or to anyone else, and is therefore not prohibited by law from owning firearms. I don't think he owns any, but it wouldn't be illegal if he did.
'Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do.. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! ..But He loves you.' - George Carlin
