Starkey's a funny one. I think he's usually right in what he's attempting to say - but the way he says it usually comes across as elitist racist cunt - almost to the extent that it's hard to believe he's not doing it on purpose.

He does it on purpose, and that's what they pay him for. And it's carefully scripted to sound provocative, without technically being racist/elitist etc.
There is nothing spontaneous about it, it's all quite deliberate.

Starkey doesn't like homophobic crime orientated hip-hop and this was his chance to make a reasonable point. Their listening to evil jazz, not just jazz. The whites have turned black was in terms of culture, just the way he said it. And people latched onto the image of white people literally turning into black people becaue they are orientated towards the visual message these days. This is a generational gap rather than a class gap. He was making a fair point only that was lost in the poor choice of metaphor....looking constantly three moves ahead he lost the eight move ahead game, in a nine move ahead world.

I've been thinking about this the last couple of days and wondered why the recent organised crime-spree did not spread to other towns and cities in England and nowhere it seems in Wales Scotland and N.I. (where as evinced earlier in the year, they're quite game to act like pricks).

Why did it not spread further? I'm wondering if it is not because that in these places we do have a class issue that is exacerbated by a form of gang culture influenced by the illusion of the O.G. mentality of the "get rich or die trying" type of gangsta rap. I'm not blaming rap, but consider it perhaps a coat of emulsion over increasing tensions in economic disparity, seeming harassment by police (add your own societal issue)

Certainly there are criminal gangs in every city, so why only these places I wonder? Do these areas have larger amounts of black youths than other cities and towns? Could this be a class thing exacerbated by race? Or are the kids there just more greedy and stupid?

There was a copper from Glasgow saying, in all seriousness, that it was pissing down and that kept people indoors.

Also the worst estates are out of town, away from shops and the affluent areas, so people would need to take a bus to go riotting.

Your point is a very good one, but the cop was talking crap, I live in Glasgow city centre and on the Sunday and Monday the weather wasn't that bad and there were a lot of wee pricks wandering around clearly looking for someone to initiate something but it never came to anything.

I would like to map the places where riots took place against where businesses are having a hard time. I know this city, it does have 'saturday night riots' on occasion like most places but was quiet on the week in question. Not like there isn't Twitter and Blackberrys along with a lot of lowlife in places around here...but maybe hailing shopowners are the missing ingredient, who'd benefit to see their shops looted/burnt out via insurance?
