I'm not into consciously eating bugs, but I can't logically support why. After all, I've eaten lobsters and crabs-- and they're basically like extra-big bugs that live in the sea.

Well, like I said, I didn't think the smilies were smug or patronising. I also think it's such a red herring to respond to an otherwise coherent and well-made argument with a complaint about tone. Or rather, dismissing the argument on account of a bloody smiley right at the end, which you take issue with…Kristie wrote:+1, thank you for putting it better than I ever could have!charlou wrote:I'm considering replying to all your posts that end with the smug and patronisinglordpasternack wrote:Just saying…![]()

"Yeah, Richard, I'll maybe engage with you when you stop being so damn strident…"
And what if I don't want to engage with those who don't make substantive points, but just continually complain vaguely about tone and offence? I'm a woman of strong convictions, to be sure, but I don't just pluck my convictions out of my arse - I spend a lot of time thinking about them, and I am willing to defend them or change them in light of argument and evidence.

As for your convictions .. emotiveness aside, I find them cogent, well argued and admirable ... the source is irrelevant.

And I just want to add that I also like your spirit, Charlou. People can have vehement disagreements about things, raise each other's hackles, stick in each others' craws - without having to fall out over the matter. We're all people with sensibilities, strong opinions, vexations, norms and values etched into our minds - and one thing that I like about the atheist/skeptic community in general, and you in particular, is the valuing of dispute, debate, and the readiness not to fall out or cloud how we see a person in other contexs because of a particular dispute.
I can be a tough old shit, and I think you can be, too - as well as compassionate, empathetic and everything else. You're one of the people in my vaguely conceived "Best of Rationalia" list, insofar as you've made me think about various issues, and reflect on things. You've taken me to task in the past, and criticised me, and I've valued it.
And I do see how, in the heat of argument or irritation, certain things can come off smug and patronising when they weren't intended to be particularly. I take that point and I will avoid using those smilies in argument.

Thanks ... and likewise, actually.
You're the second person to make a connecting comment at a time when I feel most like a spectator at a fucking circus ... but coming from the two of you, it means a lot.

Wherever I can, I choose to eat meat from animals that have been reared "free-range" rather than under factory conditions. Certainly, most sheep in Oz fall under that category, and you can buy free-range chickens; grass-fed beef tends to be the norm here as well...

It's just hard for me to take some seriously when their avatar pic is soft core porn and they use 'meh' smilies when trying to convey things they feel strongly about.lordpasternack wrote:Well, like I said, I didn't think the smilies were smug or patronising. Is cannibalism a perfectly legitimate personal choice, would you say? And should I try to stick with consenting adults - or are humanely slaughtered, milk and rusks fed, organic babies alright?JimC wrote: Vegetarianism is a perfectly legitimate personal choice, so is omnivory; let's not lecture each other about our choices...

Re: Slaughtering and eating cats (NSFW?)
For dinner I just jasmine rice cooked with a little olive oil and fresh ground pepper, and then a couple slices of cheddar over the top. And then I also sauteed some pistachio nuts, shallots, and mushrooms, and then added some fresh green beans with a little water and covered to steam until done.
I just had an orgasm in my pants.
And I didn't miss the meat one single goddamn bit

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Good for you, Tattuchu… Don't think that anyone is forcing you or judging you or anything - that you need to report back to anyone about how your vegetarianism, or flexitarianism, is going… But it's nice all the same to see someone expressing how easy and how tasty it can be to skip meat for some/all meals.

So, you are perfectly fine having a real dig at us meat eaters, but poor little vegetarians must never have their own warm and fuzzy choices questioned, the sensitive dears...lordpasternack wrote:Is cannibalism a perfectly legitimate personal choice, would you say? If very tasty aliens were discovered with a consciousness approaching humans, it would be wrong to eat them. Otherwise, I shall consume meat without the slightest shred of doubt, given reasonable animal husbandry techniques and instant killing methods.

They would be non-human people and it would be much like cannibalism. You have to have their permission to eat them.JimC wrote:So, you are perfectly fine having a real dig at us meat eaters, but poor little vegetarians must never have their own warm and fuzzy choices questioned, the sensitive dears...lordpasternack wrote:Is cannibalism a perfectly legitimate personal choice, would you say? What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
