Calls to end daily prayer in the Irish parliament

Post by Ronja » Fri Jul 22, 2011 12:25 pm

More good news from Ireland! :woot:
21 July 2011 Last updated at 12:33 GMT

There have been calls for an end to the daily Dail prayer, which has been said in the Irish parliament for almost 80 years.

A Labour TD and an independent senator said the prayer is neither appropriate nor respectful to those with other beliefs.

The prayer is said at the start of proceedings in both houses of the parliament, the Dail and the Seanad.

The issue will be discussed by a Seanad committee on Thursday afternoon.

IMO likely connected to Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Éanna Ó Cionaoith's "unprecedentedly" critical speech in the Dail (Parliament) - of which we have a thread with video here: http://www.rationalia.com/forum/viewtop ... 24&t=29502
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

"...anyone who says it’s “just the Internet” can :pawiz: . And then when they come back, they can :pawiz: again." - Tigger

Hi Ronja,

You can refer to him by the English version of his name - Enda Kenny. (This is what he is widely known as. Where did you pick up his name as Gaeilge (in Irish)?

Here's hoping, then we can turn our attention to this:

"The Angelus", shown daily at 6pm, before the main news bulletin of the day.

RTE, our national, and state funded television station claims that this is non-denominational, and even for atheists it provides a moment for reflection during the day. (Familiar argument?).

This is a bugbear for all secularists in Ireland, and it is raised at least a few times a year.

Incidentally, the above is the mark 2 version, now with improved racial and social diversity.

Here is a parody

and another

So hang on - at 6pm sharp, everybody's supposed to sit around looking morose for a couple of minutes?
Purpose, please?

On the Swedish Wikipedia, my first hit when I googled for "Enda Kenny": http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enda_Kenny

Being a member of a double language minority (I'm a Swedish-speaking Finn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish-speaking_Finns , but my first language is English) I got pretty peeved to see that the English-language Wikipedia (today's version of the page) does not even mention his name in Irish. Wherefore I have made a point of using it when posting about these latest developments (though in all other posts and places I have used both the Gaeilge and the English version side-by-side thus far - I forgot that in this post). Maybe only using the Gaeilge name is taking it a bit too far? :ask:

RTEs bullshit wiki on the matter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Angelus

Wiki's wiki on the Angelus (prayer)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelus

Leader: "The Angel of the Lord Declared unto Mary"*

Response: "And she conceived of the Holy Ghost"**

Cue fervent murmered prayer by all present ...

He calls himself Enda Kenny.

For the most part, Irish people speak English. We, in a curious Irish solution to a potentially sectarian problem, have two first languages.

Irish is going through somewhat of a renaissance. I'd love to speak it fluently, (I can get by in it), and I'd love to send my kids to an all-Irish school (Gaelscoil) so they'd get fluency. However, there is no non-denominational Gaelscoil in our area. Therefore, my children will go to our local Educate Together school.

(Educate Together is an educational movement started about 30 something years ago by parents who wanted their children educated free of sectarianism and free of indoctrination. It has grown very quickly, and despite official attempts to close it. The will of the people, even in more religious times, seems to have been growing towards a greater and greater secularism here. Thank goodness).

Ouch! To have to choose between schooling in the language that you would prefer for your kids and whether they will be subjected to woo at school... not a nice choice to have to make.

Educate Together looks pretty good based on what you wrote and what I just googled - especially comments by affronted Catholics were great promoters of ET, making very clear how "unworkable" and "mixed up" ET schools unavoidably are and how good it is to have kids of such horrible anti-Catholic parents out of Catholic schools anyway.

If anyone's interested, the anti-ET ranting starts already on the first page here http://www.politics.ie/forum/education- ... chool.html - quite an eye-opener, and no mistake...

Hey, the Taoiseach is looking awfully good for a man of 60. If I hadn't seen his DoB, I'd have placed him in his mid 40s, possibly younger if I didn't know his position... how many facelifts? and is it a toupee or a dye job?

Strange that way that Irish double Ns are rendered in English as "nd" (or is it the reverse? I hear that Eamonn corresponds to Edmund, which is definitely not a Gaelic name), I'd have never guessed that Enda would spell like that in Irish.

And are you sure all denom schools are that bad? When I worked in a Christian Brothers college in Dublin, the place was so secular I never saw a priest and did not notice any overt influence of religion in how things were taught or in other activities.
