After seeing some pictures and videos of Skepchick, I'd say she is like a girl who goes/went to engineering school. She's like a 6 at best in high school, and then she goes to a nerd, math/science-intensive college where the population of men to women is like 7 to 1. So, suddenly a 6 becomes an 8, and she thinks she's hot, and all the guys think she's hot too (because in comparison to the hairy toed birkenstock wearers in the vicinity, she is hot. Atheist and freethinker groups/conferences are like engineering schools - 7 to 1 or 10 to 1 males to females. All the single guys want to meat a nice single girl of like mind, and all the 5's and 6's look like 7's and 8's....Orwellian wrote:The Thought Police have found them out.

I read that article when it was linked in comments at Pharyngula. I thought it was pretty brilliant.camoguard wrote:I chalk it up to an interesting intersection between various movements which are all generally progressive. I thought Dawkin's analogy was harsh which made me feel like he wasn't really considering his audience when he said it. The fact that Western women don't have third world levels of oppression doesn't mean that those women aren't forced to learn to cope with systemic levels of oppression on some level.
When I saw the atheist kerflufle between what's-her-face, the-other-lady, and Dawkins, I thought of Schrodinger's Rapist immediately. Dudes who don't realize what position a woman might be in do not have the game they think they have. The corollary, is realizing a woman's point of view isn't an in. I still have to be easy being blown off because you know what, I've seen women comfortable and I've seen them uncomfortable and I've decided it's their call how they want to feel about it. That's not a war I can win without their consent which if uncomfortable, the woman hasn't given. The right to feel uncomfortable strikes me as pretty basic. I don't think we really have a better tool in our toolkit than to wait until later and review the situation to find out how reasonable we think it is.

I'm back.
But my thoughts are like a wayward ping pong ball inside my head. I am not able to concentrate or focus for more than a moment at a time. Sorry.
What does come out is like blurting, think of Brownian Touretts where random thoughts find a pore in the surface and pass through.
'Find' isn't really accurate. They just happen to be in the right place at the right time--to escape. If thoughts could be said to want to escape.
Molecules can't be said to want to escape, can they?
Thoughts, thoughts might.

Are you of the impression that I have suggested that women need to "be" any way in particular? If so, where did you get that impression?Gallstones wrote:Coito ergo sum,

Your question is nonsensical. I am fine with women in general the way they are, and if there was some "way" I wanted women to be, that would be completely irrelevant to the topic of this thread. Women have every right to "be" any way they damn well please.

And, suggesting that some people are better looking than others, and that engineering schools and atheist groups tend to have a low number of women and uglier than average people is just a statement of fact. It's not in the least "objectifying" of anyone.
