And now, not only have they picked Brisbane's ex-Mayor to lead them (thus passing over all the hopefuls that have already been elected), they've put up the CEO of the Queensland Scripture Union as a candidate for state Parliament. There's got to be something drastically wrong when they have to draft in an unelected "leader" who has to sit in the public gallery during parliament. Surely the dearth of political talent and public presentability should be ringing alarm bells within the LNP ? I can foresee the Labor Party campaign now...the LNP is a one-man show who may not even get elected, while we have a team that got you through Cyclone Yasi and the statewide floods. And to court Tim Mander of the far right fundy group, the Scripture Union ? The right is going further right, into the hands of the fundies and the left are chasing them there. We have an atheist Prime Minister who has backed away from that stance and labelled herself as a non-practising theist of some flavour to try to win more of the religious right.



So I'd say, be prepared for more dysfunctional politics catering to the loony fringes.

Nahhhh, Australia has an area of over 7.5 million square kilometres and a population of only some 22 million, so with only about 3 people per square kilometre, we've got plenty more room for socialists and dumb motherfuckers with prudish tendencies. We're by no means full.

Our "Liberal Party" is equivalent to the USA's Republican party or the UK's Conservatives.

Our "Labor Party" is supposed to be left of centre, but is creeping further and further to the right. They're supposed to be similar to the USA's Democrats or UK Labour Party (or perhaps that should be Social Democrats?)

Our left wing semi-major political party now is the Greens, a once environment policy-only party which has seemingly filled the vacuum of left wing politics left by the Labor party, but without the association with the Unions. They're advocates of freedom of speech and equality and social justice. But they're still a minority party.
