well... beside likely lobbying from the prison industrial complex, you know why they started passing thse 3strikes laws. The idea is that if a guy will go on committing crimes after release, he's not fit for society and must be put away. What are the odds of 3strikers NOT recidiving if those laws were repealed? what to do with them once they do? (since a quick application of hemp is no longer an option)Ian wrote:DEFINITELY. This is the beginning of societal collapse. Always starts with emptying the prisons. It's too expensive to keep the massive population fed so their thrown on the streets whilst cuts to the police mean they have plenty of choices.

The recividism rate for drug offenders is huge...if personal use drug offenders, (not just marijuana related ones) weren't jailed at the drop of a hat like they are now that would also reduce many of the three strike offenders.
There's a court in Santa Clara that specializes in handling drug offenders and the mentally ill...the judge, Stephen Manley handles these offenders in a much more realistic and humane manner than the regular courts do. It's been very successful, but it requires more resources up front to help these offenders. The recividism rate among the offenders who are judged by Manley in this special court is much lower than for the offenders who face the bench in regular courts.

On second thought, just eliminate the prison and build a bunch of guillotines and a Soylent Green factory.Gawdzilla wrote:You'd need shitloads of Tabasco Sauce and/or Louisiana Hot Sauce.Coito ergo sum wrote:Pork rinds can be purchased in bulk. Why does the us have such a large prison population? someone told me they are used as slave labour. is this true?

They are used as labor, but only a small percentage...I am fairly certain this is not the reason why we have such a large prison population.MarkS wrote:Why does the us have such a large prison population? someone told me they are used as slave labour. is this true?
I think it's a little more complex. To name a couple of factors that I think are contributors...our highly penalistic system of justice and big business. Private contractors manage the bulk of the physical and labor resources for prisons. Halliburton is a huge prison contractor, including the building of new ones.
