Scary day tomorrow

Post by JimC » Mon Mar 02, 2009 8:04 am

Tomorrow is forecast to have hot northerly winds of up to 100 km/hr across Victoria, which have a fair chance of fanning those damn fires back to life. Hundreds of schools are closed (not mine, though... :( ), and people are on high alert.

Won't be surprised at more property losses, but I hope people's awareness is better, and we have no more loss of life...

Your weather forecast sounds terrible Jim; I've been looking at it on the web today. :(

Hopefully, it will not be as bad as predicted. At lease people should be better prepared and forewarned this time.

It's overcast here ... it'd be perfect if the clouds would head your way and drop a downpour on the whole thing.

All the best, matey. Image

Digging in and readying the defences again. Hopefully they'll remain unused.

I think so far the prospect of having to tangle with me has kept the fire picking on soft targets. :crusade:

May circumstances favor all of you. It sounds like a terrifying situation.

Cheers, I don't know what they're playing at really. This is the third time now we've had dire warnings about atrocious fire conditions since the day when we did have atrocious fire conditions, and the third time that the weather bureau has completely overplayed the severity of the conditions. I'm sure they're overestimating simply because they will be the ones who ultimately get kicked if they get it wrong in the other direction. Much better for them to say it will be hot and windy and have it turn out to be mild and calm, than say it will be mild and calm and have it end up being hot and windy.

However, it's not good for people who are evacuating needlessly over and over, it's not good for people who are taking time off work to safeguard their properties. And it's certainly not good for the people who will ultimately simply say "yeah, yeah... that's what they say every time the sun shines" when there actually is a fire threat to worry about.

Not really, I'm sure there is some sort of pragmatic middle ground between indifference and scaremongering... something along the lines of providing factual information in a timely manner maybe.

The morning was much less windy than I thought it would be, but during the last few hours it has been very windy in the eastern suburbs. Won't be sure about the fire news till after the news tonight - I'll post here later when I have more info.

PS - Gabriel, we hear that the Yarra Valley vineyards and cafes are suffering from reduced trade, so we are planning to pop out there next monday (which is a public holiday), buy a bottle or two and have lunch. I imagine they would be open on public holidays?
