"If you only spent half the time you spend playing WoW..."

Post by Dory » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:47 pm

"If you only spent half the time you spend playing WoW on school you'd be the next Einstein!"

Really? Well, okay, fine. I'd like to formally test this theory out. I'm spending, in fact, the same exact time that I used to play computer games (all day+night)-- except this time it's meant for science studiies and I'm willing to take it as far as possible to test this theory. In addition, I'd like to test several theories on the process:

A) How smart I can get (accumulate science knowledge in my head)
B) What if I tried to master all the fields of science...will it give me an incredible overlapping view that will allow me to solve problems in an incredibly ingenious manner? I am constantly moving between chemistry, math, biology and physics, 24/7 trying to understand the world their beautiful overlap.
C) What can I do/discover with all that knowledge, and at the end contribute to humanity?
D) Most importantly-- How cool would I look with a white robe?!?

With this in mind:

1) I haven't showered in 3 days
2) I constantly think about sine cosine tangents as though they were my only 3 friends in life.
3) Whenever I look at stuff I try to vision zooming in and seeing their molecular structure.
4) Worst than 3, whenever I look at stuff I try to imagine the probability and amount of bacteria on it...ugh
5) I really, really should go brush my teeth my now, but if I do I might waste energy and fall asleep too soon before getting to watch electrochemical determinants of equilibria
6) I think I got a crush on Professor Ed Burger (think white Steve Urkel)
7) Worst than 6, I think I got a crush on professor George Wolfe (think Dr. Phil....ewww...what's wrong with me?)
8) The only reason I get excited in the morning is due to the fact I'm about to turn on my computer on and learn new shit about life, the universe, and everything.
9) I can't go longer than 15 minutes without watching/reading science.
10) I'm losing track of time (Cenozoic is the only thing I'm sure of, really)
11) Anyone who knows less science than me is officially a useless n00b to me. Anyone who knows more, is officially ranked in levels, class and experience points.

Time for my heroin shot....

Actually going to bed. Talk to you in the morning :) I hope I can sneak in a couple of clips before I need to head off to work :P (though of course, even in my work I get to study 99.9% of the time...it's just the bus drive that drives me mad [excuse the pun] because I'm condemned to a textbook and often get dizzy reading on the bus. Do you know how annoying that is to wanna learn but getting dizzy each time you try?!? Like, totally really annoying)

They suck. Khan academy is far more to the point than they are. You might wanna watch him RIP on MIT OpenCourseWare. There are lots of things fundamentally dumb about their video clips -- starting with the fact that the 1st couple of minutes are irrelevant blubber related to the students in the course (and they continuously blabber irrelevantly during). Sometimes they'll use a slide and it'll be copyrighted so WE can't see it. Sometimes they're use a board but the writing may be too small or unclear, or go badly with the angle of the camera. Worst of all, the way they arrange their clips is very webby, and not all the material is there ("look at your textbooks for the full explanation")-- with that in mind, I hope you now realize how awful they are compared to the alternatives.

Will you stop getting enthused by them? it just looks fancy because you got a teacher and it's university, but it's shit-- trust me. You're making the mistake of overvaluing something because of production cost. I can show you far better YOU-oriented clips as opposed to STUDENTS-oriented clips.

Can't you just pay Chinese students to farm science for you while you go get dunk - like all the smart boffins do? :tea:

I'm sure it depends what you are looking for. The computer science stuff is shit hot

1) They have every right to be enthused by whatever pleases them
2) Empirical evidence for it being shoite please.
3) And you can speak for the others how exactly? See you at the Randi Challenge.
4) There is no evidentially supported reason for YOU oriented clips being better than Students oriented clips, again, different users may have different perspectives on this, depending on their learning styles.

Therefore, any attempt to assert rather than opine fails

No offence intended, Dory :hugs:

1) They have every right to be enthused by whatever pleases them
Not if I deem it shit, since I know more than they do about it, I have the right to rain on their parade.
2) Empirical evidence for it being shoite please.
I already wrote them here -- They suck. There's a difference in speaking to others than telling them what to think

4) There is no evidentially supported reason for YOU oriented clips being better than Students oriented clips, again, different users may have different perspectives on this, depending on their learning styles.
Oh please, any student that'll be given a computer and get to choose a chemistry course via thinkwell or chemistry course via opencourseware will clearly choose the first.

Just to say, I won't

Just to add, there is a bit of a false dichotomy when saying this or that, elements of both could be brought in.

You know more about them than them being enthused by OCW?

2) Empirical evidence for it being shoite please.

Subjective assertion, Khan Academy may be better or even good, but one being good doesn't automatically make something else shit , and in what objective way are all the nitpicks you mentioned automatically capable of qualifying OCW as shoite? Some people like whatever they can get and ignore said nitpicks.

3) And you can speak for the others how exactly? See you at the Randi Challenge.
There's a difference in speaking to others than telling them what to think
You made the explicit assumption of saying what the others were thinking, when you said "You're making the mistake of overvaluing something because of production cost."
:hehe: , and when you said "Will you stop getting enthused by them?" it appeared to me you were trying to tell them what to think.

I have to admit, Genes, you have fully debunked me with rational and sensible arguments whereas I continued to irrelevantly and arrogantly blabber about how right I am period.

So, you may be right abut all this, but there's one thing you're wrong about....wait no, I got nothing. :P

On a serious note, they're not as bad as I describe, some universities are better than others though at these stuff. It also depends a lot on the teacher, and the quality of that particular lecture. So, lots of things come into play.
