(first things first!)I had a really good teacher in one variable calculus, so that one I passed directly, though just with a 2 out of 5. Multi-variable calculus was a nightmare - it was before I had my ADHD diagnosis, and I never managed to finish all the exam problems. After flunking it twice, I studied the whole course a second time, in Swedish (that teacher was also good), flunked once more and then finally made it with a measly 1 - but that's a pass grade!

We did our compulsory database course about a year ago, I would remember, in a group of three, and the lecturer (horrible) stressed the importance of normal forms. Yet, when one of us posed a question and as an aside mentioned normal forms in a MySQL forum, he got pretty much laughed out of there. They seemed to think normal forms were "overly academic" concerns. I would not know - I have little other experience of databases besides that course (yet).

Thanks, kir, that was educational. Your post contained more common sense than the six (seven?) lectures we had to endure. Was much more convincing, too.
Why? Well picture a lecturer with tens of theoretical research papers to his name, but not one practical DB project in the Real World (TM). And assigning a textbook from early 1990ies and using plastic overhead ... what the devil were those things even called??? You know, the analog powerpoints.
And he could not get through even one of his own examples (the same ones he has been using for at least 10 years, maybe 15), without making a logical error or a typo (usually more than one).
