Of course it is a matter of opinion. 20 years ago, there was no equivalency made between the Confederate flag and the Nazi flag, or at least hardly anyone did. What the flags symbolize - what anything symbolizes - is a matter of opinion. What else can it be? Empirical fact?

Every symbol's meaning is a matter of opinion. Many people think the Islamic crescent represents peace, many others think it represents hatred.

Both flags represent racism, and bondage to the Nth degree.

Some people say the confederate flag represents slavery and the defense of slavery, but the Nazi flag represents anti-semitism and fascism.

Two wars were fought to destroy what those flags represent.

The rebs were traitors. They were fighting to not only preserve slavery but to see it expand into the western territories. Slavery was the #1 reason for the Civil War. Trying to masquerade it with minor issues like states rights is just an attempt to deny history.
