Of course it is a matter of opinion. 20 years ago, there was no equivalency made between the Confederate flag and the Nazi flag, or at least hardly anyone did. What the flags symbolize - what anything symbolizes - is a matter of opinion. What else can it be? Empirical fact?
What utter nonsense.
Every symbol's meaning is a matter of opinion. Many people think the Islamic crescent represents peace, many others think it represents hatred.

Both flags represent racism, and bondage to the Nth degree.
Some people say the confederate flag represents slavery and the defense of slavery, but the Nazi flag represents anti-semitism and fascism.

Two wars were fought to destroy what those flags represent.
Sure, but that doesn't mean they necessarily represent the same thing.

Hate to spoil the party, but neither is "100%" anything.

Only those who live in denial would argue the confederate flag represents anything other than slavery.

As the sesquicentennial of Fort Sumter approaches in 2011, the enduring problem for neo-Confederates endures: anyone who seeks an Edenic Southern past in which the war was principally about states’ rights and not slavery is searching in vain, for the Confederacy and slavery are inextricably and forever linked.

It's not a bad observation. Its an accurate observation. Without bias it's easier to see both sides of the issue.

Affording any symbol importance by banning it merely adds weight to it. Mel Brooks has done more to break the power of the swastika than the laws forbidding its display in Germany ever could.

The American flag, the British flag, the French flag, and others, have just as negative connotations to some people as either of those. We all know they not so "black and white" as some would have us believe. Same thing with the "Stars and Bars". Most Rebs were not slave owners and were not fighting to keep the institution of slavery. They were fighting because their homes had be invaded. Invaded first by a power they didn't respect, the Federal Government. Then by the Federal armies.

Actually, most of them - and most of the yankees - were fighting because they were told to.

Men on both sides were drafted or volunteered. You can put men into uniform with a draft, but they won't be a fighting force unless they want to be.

They usually 'want to be' when there is somebody the other side of the field shooting at them and an officer behind ready to do the same if they turn and run!

Not really. Union soldiers had a chance to end the war by voting for George McClellan during the presidential election of 1864. Instead, they overwhelmingly voted for Lincoln.

The rebs were traitors. They were fighting to not only preserve slavery but to see it expand into the western territories. Slavery was the #1 reason for the Civil War. Trying to masquerade it with minor issues like states rights is just an attempt to deny history.
