Buy An Acre Of The Moon

Post by Ironclad » Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:18 pm

I see companies selling pieces of the Moon and even stars from £19.99p.
What is the legal status of such? Do we actually get this, can I charge NASA rent if they land on my property? And, what is stopping me Ebaying, lock-stock, Mars.

Fuck the Moon.

I want an acre of Mercury. There's far less and at least there's a bit of heat.

I believe that no-one owns the moon. So "selling" it has got to be a scam.

Silly waste of money.

Though I imagine there would be a nasty scramble for ownership between countries if we ever do get up there.

About me: If I had my way I'd buy a few acres of land and an old tractor. I'd drive the old tractor around the land and passers-by would stop to ask me what kind of crop I was farming. "Crop?" I'd say, "Crops are work, I'm planting ideas."

Hmmm...You could buy a quarter section and a Space Tractor, seed it down to a fescue mix and raise Moon Cows there. Presumably the lower gravity would allow the cattle to grow about as big as an elephant, so the increased shipping costs would be more than covered :dono: .

Mine mine mine!
If you are looking for unusual gifts then this surely is the perfect present...

Did you know that The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 forbids any government from claiming a planet like the Moon, but didn’t mention whether private individuals can claim some for themselves?

It's the new version of selling that bridge in Brooklyn.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

Well, not exactly. There was a treaty in the 70s that stated no state or corporation could claim the moon, but individuals were free to do so. A guy (called "The Big Cheese") claimed all of the moon for himself. Writing to NASA, the Russian space organisaton and a couple of other places, informing them of his claim. None of them replied, which he took as tacit acceptance. So now he sells 1 acre plots of the moon, complete with certification. There are other people doing the same thing now, but The Big Cheese was the first, and you can't fault the logic of his claim. :hehe:

I've owned an acre for about 8 years.

Maybe... I know you're not allowed to build a permanent structure on it though, against said treaty apparently.
