What is the legal status of such? Do we actually get this, can I charge NASA rent if they land on my property? And, what is stopping me Ebaying, lock-stock, Mars.

If you are looking for unusual gifts then this surely is the perfect present...
Did you know that The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 forbids any government from claiming a planet like the Moon, but didn’t mention whether private individuals can claim some for themselves?
It has fuck-all legal status, and a good thing too.Ironclad wrote:...What is the legal status of such?..
Well, not exactly. There was a treaty in the 70s that stated no state or corporation could claim the moon, but individuals were free to do so. A guy (called "The Big Cheese") claimed all of the moon for himself. Writing to NASA, the Russian space organisaton and a couple of other places, informing them of his claim. None of them replied, which he took as tacit acceptance. So now he sells 1 acre plots of the moon, complete with certification. There are other people doing the same thing now, but The Big Cheese was the first, and you can't fault the logic of his claim.AshtonBlack wrote:I believe that no-one owns the moon. So "selling" it has got to be a scam.
Got any pictures of your moon acre?Pappa wrote:I've owned an acre for about 8 years.
Can I park my trailer on it?Pappa wrote:Well, not exactly. There was a treaty in the 70s that stated no state or corporation could claim the moon, but individuals were free to do so. Maybe... I know you're not allowed to build a permanent structure on it though, against said treaty apparently.maiforpeace wrote:Can I park my trailer on it?Pappa wrote:Well, not exactly.
