Well, I would reply straight away with "why do you feel it is important to ban such discussions at RatSkep?".

I admit that my Semen thread was mischievous, and I will allow that the majority of members don't want to go down the seriously "depraved" route or even have a NSFW sub forum, but a ban on any sexual discussion outside of the purely scientific seems a bit harsh.

As I said in the OP here, I reckon that it's just a temporary thing while the forum is established - perhaps I was a bit quick to bring the subject up and I apologise if anyone is upset, but I have seen how a small number of staff on a forum can determine the ethos and vibe of a forum for hundreds if not thousands of future members by imposing their own values very early on (not necessarily in a malign way - they may feel they are representing the whole community) - was it such a massively troublesome thing for me to have raised a serious point about the future direction of Ratskep, an online community which I belong to as much as anyone? :dono:

I think the sex question is quite an important one given its history in our community as a whole (RDF, TAF, Rationalia) - I certainly don't think that discussion about it should be shut down, or threads locked prematurely.

In that case I would restate my earlier question. ;)

The Semen thread was mischevious and was also unoriginal. We had already binned a thread with the exact same title that OBC had started. If you wanted to seriously bring up this topic for discussion then it was probably not the best way to go about it. ;)

Perhaps it was the way you ran in like naughty schoolboy with your semen thread and then seemed to be looking for the 'drama' in your tech support thread before the forum had even had a chance to settle. Given the 'history' and all the 'angst' and 'drama' about this issue are you really surprised that the discussion was shut down quickly? Our community has been through enough drama recently and we just want to settle into our new home. Not all of us thrive on drama you know. ;)

There is no drama in the thread I started in Tech Support. None.

Yes, I am. Especially by someone who wasn't even there when the so called "angst" and "drama" happened. Listen to yourself...."the discussion was shut down quickly". :nono:

The initial "angst" and "drama" you speak of was caused for reasons which no longer apply to RatSkep, namely the protection of Dawkins' charitable status. What's wrong with asking about the subject again politely, moderately and calmly? Who the hell are you to slap down perfectly reasonable questions and debate by locking threads arbitrarily?
Our community has been through enough drama recently and we just want to settle into our new home.

Once again - no fucking drama. Read the thread again carefully. Drama starts when bullshit is thrown about, as you are doing now. Oh, and as someone with over 4,000 posts on RDF (and almost 6,000 culled) it's as much my community and "home" as yours. Don't forget that.
Not all of us thrive on drama you know. ;)
Yes, but it seems some of us thrive on patronising bullshit and power trips. ;)

Chronological order of events:

At Rationalia
OP from this thread:
devogue wrote:Sorry if this has been brought up before.

I notice that on the new forum ( http://www.rationalskepticism.org ) personal discussions about sex are not allowed - the agrrement has been lifted wholesale from RDF.

I assume that the FUA there at the moment is only temporary and that this abberation will be removed now that there is no greatly liked and loveable person to protect.

What does semen taste like? Seriously.

I'm honestly not trying to flame or anything. I just want to discover the vibe of the new forum.

NOTE: You are correct that you were not inciting drama per se in any of your posts on the tech support thread. You asked a question and your question was answered.

Helloooo stranger!

Have you noticed how all those hateful mods at RDF have got their claws in to this bright shiny new forum as well? Everyone knows they said "Yes, Josh. You're right Josh. Pull the forum, Josh. That's what you should do." Now they're all here, crawling like Phylloxera through Chateau Lafite's hallowed vines...

I think you and I should be mods, Pauline. We will lay the foundations for a thousand year reich new dawn, a benevolent, Arthurian Camelot of a forum, where all the members shall play and frolic, where spunk will be seen for the beautiful natural ejaculate that it is, where fisting shall be seen in Olympian Stronger, Faster, Higher terms and where the name devogue will ring like thunder on a summer day, promising drama, refreshment, hope and fire...

Correct me if I've missed something, but so far the only argument I've seen from you as to why it is so important that RatSkep changes our FUA to include personal sexual discussion is:

So you want to talk about sex with Goldenmane...?

:sarcstart: well let's just change our FUA and the existing culture of our community so you can do that... :console: :sarcend:

"Question answered, thread locked" ... I'd hoped that would have been left behind with RDF too. :nono:

You'd probably feel differently if it was your questions that were 'answered' and then the thread locked. It's kinda belittling when adults that want to discuss in more detail or want to debate the issue get basically told to hush when by their thread being locked.

If that happened and I thought that more discussion was necessary then I would PM the staff member who locked the thread and explain my reasoning. I guess another way to go about it would be to start a 'Same Bastard Mods' thread on the general discussion board of the forum. :dono:

I think issues with the way another forum is run or it's policies would be best addressed to the management of the other forum. Discussing them here isn't going to accomplish anything other than raise the ire of people.

Is there any chance you guys could discuss the FUA of RatSkep over there?

Edit: Snap with Sciwoman.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

The "Same Bastard Mods" thread was started before the 'Sex' thread was locked, and if anyone took Dev's OP all that seriously then :?

Edit: whoops, sorry DP & sciwoman! Agreed. :td:
