Man, two Dicaprio threads back-to-back? You must be a huge fan! I don't really feel like/don't have time to discuss it in detail but it was a tired cop-out that retrospectively turned all the fun, clever power struggles into white noise. May discuss further when I have a bit of time.

The Hubble thread was despite the fact that De Crap Io was involved. I plan to bring a device and listen to Pink Floyd during that show. Darkside of the Moon was MADE for that.

As for Shutter Island, they could have done better by making its a McCarthyist nightmare rather than a personal tragedy for "our hero", no?

He also could have dropped the social parallels, sophomoric dream sequences and played the film completely straight as a man trying to piece together facts and cling to sanity on an island of madmen and psychopaths. The film relies heavily on simple genre-film fun anyway and that's where its strengths lie.

I was hoping he would "prove" his theory rather than it being part of his delusion. That reduced it to another "madman's fantasies" movie.

Worse than that, he pulled the foundations from under the film and everything crumbled. All the paranoia, mind games and struggles against tyranny get reframed as a therapy session. The previous scenes are now flattened and uninteresting. It was a cheap trick in service of nothing.

It's based on a book by Dennis Lehane (who also wrote Mystic River) with the same ending (more or less,) so I expect it was very much planned from the beginning.
