Man, two Dicaprio threads back-to-back? You must be a huge fan! I don't really feel like/don't have time to discuss it in detail but it was a tired cop-out that retrospectively turned all the fun, clever power struggles into white noise. May discuss further when I have a bit of time.

The Hubble thread was despite the fact that De Crap Io was involved. I plan to bring a device and listen to Pink Floyd during that show. Darkside of the Moon was MADE for that.heyzeus wrote:Man, two Dicaprio threads back-to-back? You must be a huge fan! As for Shutter Island, they could have done better by making its a McCarthyist nightmare rather than a personal tragedy for "our hero", no?

If you haven't seen it, get out of this thread immediately, it will ruin the movie. That's why I put "spoiler" in the subject line.kiki5711 wrote:wait a minute, I've been waiting to see that! What happened to it?

He also could have dropped the social parallels, sophomoric dream sequences and played the film completely straight as a man trying to piece together facts and cling to sanity on an island of madmen and psychopaths. The film relies heavily on simple genre-film fun anyway and that's where its strengths lie.Gawdzilla wrote:The Hubble thread was despite the fact that De Crap Io was involved. I was hoping he would "prove" his theory rather than it being part of his delusion. That reduced it to another "madman's fantasies" movie.heyzeus wrote:He also could have dropped the social parallels, sophomoric dream sequences and played the film completely straight as a man trying to piece together facts and cling to sanity on an island of madmen and psychopaths. Worse than that, he pulled the foundations from under the film and everything crumbled. All the paranoia, mind games and struggles against tyranny get reframed as a therapy session. The previous scenes are now flattened and uninteresting. It was a cheap trick in service of nothing.

I wonder if they copped out at last moment or if they're planning on having an "alternate ending" on the DVD?heyzeus wrote:Worse than that, he pulled the foundations from under the film and everything crumbled. I don't imagine Scorsese would do such a thing. This was probably planned from the beginning.

Re: Shutter Island Spoiler thread.
It's based on a book by Dennis Lehane (who also wrote Mystic River) with the same ending (more or less,) so I expect it was very much planned from the beginning.heyzeus wrote:I don't imagine Scorsese would do such a thing. This was probably planned from the beginning.
A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

It was close to "And Bobby walked out of the shower - oh my it was all a dream, you're not dead after all Bobby".
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.
