What do we want?
Gradual change!
When do we want it?
In due course!

Hey mkpr, glad you could make it. We're trying to set up the science writing competition here.Geophilo wrote:Well I'm here, not that I got a mention after the first few pages!! Btw, I actually thoroughly support RD's sentiments. Christs sake, it's not a fucken charity he's running. Get over it and go somewhere else (like we all have)
edit: i guess it IS a charity. But the forum isn't, at least not FOR us.
And I think perhaps you've missed out on the details of what actually happened on RDF due to the selective editing of Josh and old Chalkers over there, who have made it look like they announced a change in forum structure which was followed by

You'll find this story explained in much more detail elsewhere, but the summary is: They announced a change in forum structure, some were upset, some were confused and some were apathetic (and some, even now, are quite excited about the prospect). Then they started deleting members (including their entire positing history) for simply disagreeing with them. This included Mazille, CJ and DarwinsBulldog. About an hour after their initial announcement, they had DELETED 6 members and over 30,000 posts. Then they froze the forum to stop anyone and limited PM capability to stop people congregating elsewhere.
Basically, they acted like complete jackasses and spat on those most loyal to their cause, then edited all the details of the event to make it look like all the members went crazy because the forum was changing...

Doesn't show by that name in the Members list. You can search for a specific name if you're wondering whether they're here or not. Faster than paging through the list.Wiðercora wrote:Wasn't there a 'rohm'?

Cheers for the explanation Samsa. I read some of the backstory, but still I don't have a great deal of sympathy. Ultimately all forums are dictatorships, not democracies. People need to keep in mind that they are there at the pleasure of the owners/admins. If I were RD I would have expressed similar exasperation at the behaviour of many members. The new forum may well be less voluminous, but it might be more interesting than wading through pages of boring personal opinions ( like mine). I should shut up now! Bad intro to rationalia!!!!

Its very rude when a publican comes over and tells you not to discuss (what ever it is you want to discuss) in HIS pub ... even though you are paying to drink HIS beer ...In 2008, this is what Dawkins himself had to say about our community:
“It is a community, and that is a valuable part of it. Many of our forum threads have an atmosphere of friends going out for a drink and chatting. I think that is valuable, and I don’t think we should insist on sticking to serious topics. That would be a good way to stifle the sense of community, and that would be a real shame.”

Sure the forum was 'free' but a lot of us supported the publican's foundation and supported him personally by buying and promoting his work.

Yes you can ... and yes you did.Geophilo wrote:can I ask WTF will be achieved by this?ED209 wrote:It's been suggested that former members of the RD forum rip out the Josh Timonen dedication page en masse to present these to Richard Dawkins at the upcoming book signings in Australia. I personally feel this is an appropriate protest that does not involve being a dick to one of the world's premier intellectuals and a hero of mine, and would do this myself if I had the opportunity.

Nah, he knows. He's not very interested in further discussion, apparently: he's work on a 'video against evolution'. Poor youtube.hackenslash wrote:swiatlo is logged in at RDF. I haven't the hart to tell him.

Whatever will we do!? No atheist will be able to stand up to such an onslaught. I can feel my atheism leaving me as we speak...ozewiezeloose wrote:Nah, he knows. Re: Who is still missing?
Are Newolder and susu.exp here yet? Discussions are more interesting with the participation of people who actually know something about science (not saying that there aren't plenty of them here already). The two guys I mentioned are people whose posts I would accept as fact, without giving it a second thought.
