A Translation of Baron D'Holbach's
"LE BON SENS" (1772)
"Atheism leaves men to Sense, to Philosophy, to Laws, to Reputation, all which may be guides to moral Virtue, tho' Religion were not: but Superstition dismounts all these, and erects an absolute Monarchy in the Minds of Men. Therefore, Atheism did never perturb States; but Superstition hath been the confusion of many. The causes of Superstition are pleasing and sensual rights, and Ceremonies; Excess of Pharisaical and outside holiness, Reverence to Traditions and the stratagems of Prelates for their own Ambition and Lucre." -- Lord Bacon.

Just finished Netherland by Joseph O'Neill. Good, light contemporary novel about 911, relationships, and cricket. Mostly cricket.

It's been on my shelf for a couple of months now. I can't seem to get round to it. College is taking up most of my time. (not that I'm complaining)Clinton Huxley wrote:Just finished Netherland by Joseph O'Neill. Good, light contemporary novel about 911, relationships, and cricket. Mostly cricket.

HMS Surprise by Patrick O'Brian. What that chap didn't know about a foretops'l probably isn't worth knowing. Aubrey and Maturin, surely two of the greatest characters in fiction. 20 books in the series, 17 to go. Woot.

Awesome books. Now if only O'Brian and MacDonald Fraser had collaborated on a Aubrey / Flashman novel......JimC wrote:Enjoy!Clinton Huxley wrote:HMS Surprise by Patrick O'Brian. Finally getting stuck into Castles of Steel. Just coming up to the Battle of Coronel and, so far, the RN is not doing terribly well......

Aye, by doing what should have been done in the first place, send a couple of battlecruisers instead of some clapped out old crock like the Canopus.klr wrote:Wait until you get to the Battle of the Falkland Islands - The Empire Strikes Back.Clinton Huxley wrote:klr wrote:I don't want to spoil the ending for you ...Clinton Huxley wrote:Finally getting stuck into Castles of Steel.
