In the days leading up to Easter, President Donald Trump has repeatedly—and falsely—claimed that egg prices have plummeted to the point of being “too low,” baselessly citing steep double-digit declines—even as Americans face record-high prices at the grocery store.
“The egg prices are down 87 percent, but nobody talks about that,” the President said on Friday. “You can have all the eggs you want, we have too many eggs, in fact, if anything the prices are getting too low.”

The CPI egg index jumped by 5.9 percent from February and was up 60.4 percent compared to March 2024, and the average price for a dozen grade A large eggs climbed 5.6 percent to a record $6.23.”
Moe Davis, the well-known retired U.S. Air Force colonel, attorney, and former administrative law judge, posted to social media a federal government chart of egg prices.
“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” Davis wrote, “the price of a dozen eggs in March was $6.23, the highest price ever recorded and 26% higher than in January when Trump took office. Of course if Trump says egg prices are down then the MAGA cult is obliged to say egg prices are down.”
I think we've generally never been that reliable an ally - our failure to join the League of Nations after the first World War and the disastrous Smoot-Hawley tariffs we enacted during the Depression are good examples of the isolationist strain that runs through our politics. Throw in the periodic zenophobia and infatuations with demagogues like Father Coughlin, Joseph McCarthy, George Wallace, and Pat Buchanan, and the Trump phenomenon is not that surprising. The problem is that this time, we're a house of cards, saddled with debt and looming health and financial crises, while trying to balance competing, expensive international commitments. Say that despite the efforts of the Trumpists, a Democratic president is elected in a few years. That by no means ensures that in another four years some absurd goon like JD Vance or Don Jr. doesn't take back the White House and carry on the MAGA project of sucking up to dictators and scorning long-time allies. When a country shits the bed by choosing a wilfully ignorant, authoritarian, compulsively dishonest grifter and narcissist megalomaniac as its leader (for a second time no less) it's time to reconsider the nature of connections with that country.

He's installed a US Attorney General who doesn't respect her own office enough to demonstrate even a pretence of independence from the White House. She's ready to do his bidding regardless of whether it has anything to do with legitimate prosecution or not. Given his demonstrated willingness to use his power as president to stomp on those he believes to be his enemies, it's not as if it's unlikely he'll be carrying out 'vengeance and retribution' using his unwarranted control over the legal arm of the government. He had said that was his plan before he was elected. He wasn't shy about saying he believed he would be justified in going after people.
Fauci has been a target for MAGA for years now. I'm sure that he's still getting death threats from brave patriots. You yourself have shown animosity toward him. Biden was doing what he could to shield somebody who worked for decades to save American lives from an openly vindictive authoritarian. I think Fauci has no illusions regarding Trump's willingness to weaponize the presidency either.
