But the US 10-year bond rate only rose half a per cent, from 4 to 4.5 per cent, which wouldn't have been enough even if he was watching, which he wouldn't have been, and it was already declining when the pause was announced.

A much more likely explanation is that those tariffs were never intended to last — they were always going to be used to extort trade deals out of smaller countries. ("Nice little export industry you have there, pity if something were to happen to it.")

Threatening those tariffs wouldn't have worked because no one would have believed it. Calculating a reciprocal tariff purely according to the size of a trade deficit? It was ridiculous, mocked by economists and serious people around the world.

So he had to actually do it, to prove that he would, and then pause them while deals are forced on panicking exporters.

Announcements will be scattered over the next three months to glorify the Godfather, Mr Trump. The United States has become a gangster state.

Australia should rethink its relationship with America because alliance is becoming obeisance.

Yeah, extortion is the art of the deal with Trump. What amazes me is how people fall for his BS over and over, even though they've seen it in action and been warned by people who have worked for him for years.

And it's going to work, Trump is going to negotiate favorable trade deals in a matter of weeks or months. Without his shock and awe, things would be much slower. They'll be some shake ups in the short term, but Trump will get increased manufacturing back to the US.

I had a cool job at Riviana Foods as a youngster. It was a large facility that had everything from r&d to cooking and packaging for rice. Technically I worked for a sheet metal company that had a permanent spot on-site. I remember it fondly. If the environment is right and you’ve got a real union or something similar why not?

The so-called 'elite' that Trump and the Repugs object to and want to undermine is a cultural elite rather than the traditional class of people seen as having the most power and influence in a society on account of their wealth &/or access to power. People with college degrees and a centrist, moderate, or liberal pov are just not True American Patriots™.
