It is a serious issue here in Oz. People have been permitted to build homes right in the middle of eucalyptus forests. Romantic as anything on nice day, but hell on Earth when a bushfire rolls through. Even in winter it is a recipe for disaster - recently, a severe storm swept through the hills around Melbourne, with dozens of homes crushed by towering eucalypts, and thousands without power for weeks.

You have to be practical. I stayed in a fancy hotel in Queensland's tropical forest. It looked great and romantic but a fire risk it was. It was owned by a Swiss family who had a very laid-back attitude to the whole place.

If it was in the rainforest it would have a very low risk of fire. At least traditionally. The last fire season in southern Queensland and NSW saw fire getting into the rainforests. I guess we'll see more of that from now on with climate change.
