It's almost as if the the Republicans don't like poor or sick people.
The Kansas City Star (Kansas City, Missouri) states that as the reason. I don't claim to understand the thinking of Republican politicians.
Let’s be clear about the numbers. Expanding Medicaid would cost about $1.6 billion, according to the bill. Of that, only $103 million would come from the state’s general revenue. More than $1.4 billion would come from Washington.

No one can seriously argue Missouri lacks its $103 million share. State revenues are relatively even after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the federal government is pouring billions of additional dollars into the state to ease any additional budget concerns.

Even Gov. Mike Parson’s budget provides for expanded Medicaid. He knows the money is there. In fact, Missouri is likely eligible for enhanced payments from Washington for Medicaid expansion as part of the COVID-19 relief bill.

None of this made the slightest difference. Lawmakers on the Budget Committee simply threw more than $1 billion into the garbage, along with the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

If even money were tight, though, lawmakers still have no choice but to spend the cash, because the state constitution now requires coverage for eligible Missourians. Period. Legislators simply can’t ignore the constitution when it’s distasteful.

The fact that Republicans want to do so is extraordinarily enlightening, and frightening. They’re turning down billions of federal dollars. They’re ignoring voters. They’re violating the state constitution. Why?

Because they hate the poor. There can be no other explanation. That hatred is so intense, it overrides greed, political ambition, even respect for the law. Far too many GOP lawmakers don’t want this to be a state where even one poor Missourian gets treated for a cough or a broken finger.

“To the people of Missouri who did the work to get their neighbors healthcare, you deserve so much better than being told your voice doesn’t matter,” state Rep. Betsy Fogle tweeted after the vote.

To that, we would add: Missourians deserve representatives who understand the law, and have some feeling for other human beings.

Somebody got to Geraldo Rivera. Then again despite his unctuous arse-kissing of the Golden Idol, he's never been completely trustworthy.

'Geraldo Rivera: Biden Was NOT the "Pathetic, Senile, Incomprehensible Old Fool Some Critics Predicted He Would Be"'
Geraldo Rivera offered the increasingly rare counter-argument to the right-of-center narrative about President Joe Biden following his first press conference and subtly criticized many of his Fox News cohorts at the same time.

Rivera joined Fox & Friends at the top of the 8 AM hour and was asked to opine on Biden’s performance at his first briefing that had occurred on Thursday, and opened with disappointment that he didn’t call on Fox News White House reporter Peter Doocy (which is a sentiment shared by others.) But it is what followed that stuck out as a unique bit of content so rarely seen on Fox News (or any cable outlet for that matter of late) in which Geraldo said the thing that no one was really expected to say.

“I must admit that he was not the pathetic senile incomprehensible old fool some critics predicted he would be in an hour-long press conference, he did a substantively fine job, answered most of the questions,” Geraldo pointed out.

(Record scratch sound effect goes here.)

Hannity on Monday claimed Democrats are behind “a chilling, Orwellian effort … to silence, cancel, any opposition voices,” while Carlson pointed to the sight of the fortified capital ahead of the inauguration as a show of force from Democrats intending to send the message: “Do not question us. Men with guns enforce our decrees,” Axios reports.

And yet, Hannity and Carlson are still free and on the air. :coffee:

Shithead lies about gun violence. Warning, facts are checked in the article below. Our leftist brother from the north can safely ignore this one.

'GOP Rep. Boebert Bizarrely Compares Firearm Killings to Murder by Hammer'
In the wake of a mass shooting that left 10 people dead in her state, freshman Congresswoman Lauren Boebert brought some insensitive snark to an interview on the topic by suggesting hammers are more lethal than firearms.

“In America, we see more deaths by hand, fist, feet, even hammers, and, you know, are we going to start legislating that away or are we going to be like these other countries who even ban knives?” Boebert said, “I mean, if hammers are the cause of more death than firearms, then maybe we need to start having background checks on hammers. I mean, look out, Black and Decker.”

According to the data platform Statista, annual deaths caused by firearms (handguns and other types) in 2019 numbered 9,649; annual deaths from personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) and blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) numbered 997. That means guns killed 8,652 more people in 2019 than personal weapons and blunt objects combined.

So when Boebert says that we see “we see more deaths by hand, fist, feet, even hammers” than guns, she is lying.

Colorado has some of the strictest gun laws in the country?

The waitstaff at her restaurant wear sidearms. :fp:

Maine has one of the lowest murder rates in the country, or the lowest, yet most of our murders are by gun. I've never heard of anyone getting murdered by a hammer up here.
I do have a surreal story about that though, if y'all are interested. If not scroll on now.
I was a postal worker in Massachusetts, and somewhere around 20 years ago I was sorting bundles of tv guides on the dock with a friend and new co-worker we didn't know. He was maybe 20 years old. The bundles were of 6-10 each. My friend and I were entertaining each other with light-hearted humor, when out of nowhere, at point blank range and as hard as he could, the other guy planted a bundle right in my face, then immediately apologized profusely. What could I do, so I scratched my head and let it go. A few hours later we were back inside and the boss asked us if we'd seen him, which not since he punched me in the face with Oprah Winfrey, so we said no. Yada yada yada and when I got home it was all over the news that the kid killed his mother with a hammer. :( I guess I dodged a bullet that day!

When 73% of all homicides in the US are done with a gun it is diffficult to argue that "we see more deaths by hand, fist, feet, even hammers” than guns". Boebbles may be confusing her country with England and Wales. At one stage Maxwell went on a rampage with his silver hammer over there.

We should examine who is responsible for more deaths with their 'gun rights'

Individuals, or governments?

Neither. Guns are responsible for all of them.
