Yes, producing and distributing food is a relevant profession that's not affected by shutdowns in any country. It might be affected by not doing a shutdown if you are unlucky
Producing and distributing food is done by 'the economy'.
Rubbish. The economy is the result of production and distribution. As long as you have workers able to perform the tasks, you'll have economic activity.
So that onion farmer, who had to work to bury his crop, because he couldn't sell it...

Would you say his ability to produce onions was all that was needed? Or would he need to also be willing?

Why shouldn't we, The Great State of Florida, open our economy back up? We're doing as well or better than pretty much any EU country including Germany. We've had under 1700 deaths. 1700 in a population of nearly 23 million,
Wow, go you! Australia has had 90 odd deaths with a population of about 23 million.

The infection is only transmissible for two weeks. South Korea didn't even have to shut down.

The planet I want to live on is the one where we take scientists more seriously than a birdbrain who thinks you can cure a virus by injecting disinfectant.
I don't give a fuck what Trump thinks, he has absolutely nothing to do with the decisions we need to make on a state level. I also don't care who is in charge of the state, GOP or Dems, it doesn't matter. The science said we needed to flatten the curve. We've done that (I'm only speaking for Florida here). We needed to get on the far side of the infection bell curve. We've done that. We've implemented every suggestion, and from what we're seeing it is working.

I'll ask again, why should we NOT start a phased reopening?

What is it, given our numbers that should prevent that?
If you really have got on the far side of the bell curve, then it's testing and contact tracing that really matters now. As you open up you'll get an increase in outbreaks, so it's critical that you get on top of them really quickly with contact tracing and widespread testing.

I don't know if anyone has a problem with Florida opening up. But it's got to be done in a staged way. If you just go from zero to max, then you'll get a blowout in cases.

Curves for Australia, Germany and Florida. Doesn't really look like Florida is ready yet. I'd even say that Germany is not ready yet and waiting another two weeks would have been better. But Florida is really not there yet. Unless you have setup a really rich infrastructure to do the tracing and isolating strategies.

Yeah, Florida isn't ready to open back up again. You'll definitely get back on the exponential wagon if you do.

Over half of those new cases are in three counties - Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach, which is the far southern tip of the state. They aren't opening as quickly. Why should we, with a few hundred total cases, be shut down like counties with thousands and thousands? Why should the Panhandle counties be treated like Miami, when some have literally got case numbers in double figures and single figure death counts?
This could be done. Here in Queensland we are opening up differently rural vs built up areas. Rural is allowed to travel greater distances and have more people congregating in various different categories of business/activities. I think they are allowed to open some business types before we are here in the built up areas.

Honestly, I'm a bit worried we are opening too early here, so I can't really imagine Florida opening yet. It's all really down to how effective your testing and contact tracing is. If this government tracing app gets enough support that could be a real big part of clamping down on outbreaks if and when they occur.

Wow, go you! Australia has had 90 odd deaths with a population of about 23 million.
New Zealand
population: 5 million
deaths: 21
Deaths/million: 4.2

Australia
population: 25 million
deaths: 93
Deaths/million: 3.7

Texas
population: 29 million
deaths: 948
Deaths/million: 32.7

Florida
population: 21.5 million
deaths: 1539
Deaths/million: 71.6

Germany
population: 83 million
deaths: 7510
Deaths/million: 90.5

More important than those figures are the ones showing how fast the rate of new infections is dropping. Also, I agree with Lalak about granularity, at least up to a point. Why should most of Florida remain locked down when 22,967 of its 39,199 inhabitants who have been tested positive live in three of its 67 counties?

We're doing it, one way or another. Hold our beers and watch this. Almost all beaches are open with social distancing. If the monkeys do as they're told it will likely be OK. Restaurants open at 25% capacity. But they gotta do it, because they sure as hell won't do what is required to keep it shut down much longer.

Who fucking knows? Stay tuned to this channel, folks.

After seeing what i saw today, my worries might be warranted. This weekend is the first weekend of slightly relaxed restrictions, and the roads were blocked with traffic and the shops packed with people. Technically not supposed to be in groups bigger than 5. How that applies to a big shopping centre that is packed is anyone's guess. I could easily see an outbreak coming with these numbers. Perhaps the numbers will die off once people get it out of their system.

I think the really positive thing, is that it seems to transmit poorly outside.

Sunshine isn't just a disinfectant - it is a radiation blast that will blow the colour out of childrens cereal. I don't know the numbers for its survival outside, but it seems to be safer to let people mix outdoors, over indoors.

And people will be desperate to mix.

This is going to be awhile sorting out. Lots of waves of human fuckups to appreciate, in between the virus infection waves.

:funny:
Do you all believe that data when it has been proven time and time again to be worthless.

Is the data all collected in the same way even remotely? Does a death in Germany or UK mean it has been gathered correctly following the same protocol? Of course not. Just when is a death a corona death. The majority of older people who died here had an underlying sicknesses. Was every death investigated to find the true cause?
I wonder if all the counties in Florida use the same protocol or is it like the Bush election when each county had its own election system and voter suppression. Just how strong is the political influence and what role does it play in the data. Do red states suppress the figures and blue ones inflate them?

Unemployment data that is coming out in the USA is another laugh a minute. It is said to be 16,5% when it is known that many do not sign on for dole. On our news last night a comparison was made with the Great Depression. Quite amazing when you consider that nobody knew how many were unemployed at the time and it was just a guesstimate.

This reliance on government data is quite ridiculous. In this country there are calls for all the data to be re-examined as the way deaths were recorded in some care homes is considered dubious.

They want the same thing here.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Now people are accepting African data as gospel as well.
My late girlfriends niece works for a charity in Tanzania as a neurologist in a hospital there. I get her monthly newsletter. The hospital has only five medically approved masks which they recycle. They dont have any government office they can report too but yet Tanzania is on the WorldoMeter list with 509 cases. Just who is reporting them and to whom.
