I was out of work in 2009 for a couple of months, and underemployed for about a year after, but we had savings to fall back on and did okay until I got a good job.

We'll have to dig into money here (again) and hope like hell we can somehow get it back in the future, assuming we can even get money there with all the banks effectively shut down. We just lost 500 quid trying to send it from the UK, it just fucking disappeared into the ether, the Swazi bank says it never arrived and HSBC says it was sent, it's being "looked into" by the HSBC "international desk". What you gonna do?

I don't give a fuck what Trump thinks, he has absolutely nothing to do with the decisions we need to make on a state level. I also don't care who is in charge of the state, GOP or Dems, it doesn't matter. The science said we needed to flatten the curve. We've done that (I'm only speaking for Florida here). We needed to get on the far side of the infection bell curve. We've done that. We've implemented every suggestion, and from what we're seeing it is working.

I'll ask again, why should we NOT start a phased reopening?

What is it, given our numbers that should prevent that?

How many new cases and deaths are you getting per day? How many of the new cases have all their contacts found and tested? Are all new cases properly isolating? How many of the new cases are from an unknown source? With answers to those, competent modelling by experts and a very well thought out plan, a staged re-opening is possible. But my first questions are the critical ones...

PS - lak, I found a webpage with Florida's statistics. Your last daily increase was 371 new cases and 69 deaths, compared to 18 and 1 respectively in Oz. By that, I'm afraid that your curve is not yet flattening...

Rubbish. The economy is the result of production and distribution. As long as you have workers able to perform the tasks, you'll have economic activity.

The problem is not food production. The problem is a failure of the state to provide citizens with the means to acquire food during the crisis.

What 'state' has the responsibility to provide citizens with food?

This used to be provided by willing, working food-producers.

The food is there anyway.

It doesn't belong to you.

The food workers are there anyway.

Do they belong to you?

The citizens are there anyway.

They are not allowed to purchase the food in their well-built, complicated way.

The government shut it down.

So all that generated 'wealth' wasn't.

If the food has to be disposed because no one can afford it, the problem is not having a shutdown of businesses to bring down virus infections, the problem is the state not organizing means for the food to get to the citizens.

The 'state' doesn't own food. Are you of the opinion that people should be enslaved, forced to give up the food they produce, because the government is having a shutdown?

The easiest solution would be having social security nets and additional crisis handouts to make sure the citizens have enough money to buy their own food. It cannot be that difficult for a country that spends trillions on military armament.

You keep insisting that this 'food' should be taken by the government, and given to someone hungry.

There is not much motivation in this scenario, to be a food-producer, is there? I'm already not going to farm. The onion guy is likely to quit. Who is going to produce all this food for you? And are they slaves? Indentured? Willing and charging all the traffic will bear?

You aren't making sense, except as a person who fears the virus more than anything, including poverty starvation and it's after effects.

I see Nineberry gave up, and I don't blame him. But to answer in his stead, the state isn't taking ownership of food or food distribution, it's providing the safety net that allows people to continue purchasing food after their jobs were lost. It's about providing childcare/school facilities for workers in critical roles such as farming and food distribution. It's about allowing food distribution across locked state borders.
