All kinds of cottage industries are making masks. We even gave my mom's 1990 sewing machine away, after failing to sell it for 50 dollars for a year. But most of them fail to protect you anywhere near 90% because they lack that metal clip that forms the seal around your nose. Also, the rubber bands give a tighter fit that the bands around the ears. This mask, if used for trips indoors to shop, will last a month's use. Some have a valve in the middle to prevent pressure building inside, so it does not protect others from you as well as this one does.

Trump must want the German hairdressers to DIE.

They should all continue to shelter in place, no matter WHAT the orange dwarf says!

Structural, eh? Should give you a bunch of make-work with the most recent political upheaval.

My guess would be you are not a runner, since being fit enough to run would not allow you time here (with 60h work weeks) but if you are, why not virtually beat my kilometer, mile, 5k, 10k time? I haven't put a 'improved' time for greater distances, but I would be open to it.

Just think - you could have all the pride due you, for beating a kooky, pudgy old man!

The absolute numbers are not as important as the shape of the curves.

The absolute numbers ARE important, as is the average.

Have you compared the US to a fairly comperable population density area? If we pull New York out of the US numbers, and pull out Germany's biggest city, how does that change the math?

Most of the US doesn't live as 'tight' as Germans. More room to spread out. I think it matters a lot.

You are desperate to get a haircut, great! Trump is insisting that economy will HAVE to open. Clearly you agree.

When, becomes the significant question, and in the US, it can't be one date. Things in Fargo are VERY different than things in New York City.

So again, Trump leaving it to the governers is like the EU leaving it to the German Leader, (as well as other areas 'governors', like for the other EU 'states')

What do you think of that Tanzania story, NB?

The president tested goats, pawpaw and other non-human things, returned the tests with human-sounding names, and many were positive.

My take on it is this: there are a (hopefully) predictable number of 'false-positives' in any testing. This President chose (or was led) to pull this 'fast one' which proves there is something...

To me, the 'something' is probably the usual 'false-positive' rate, with a scary story.

To others, the 'something' is a plot to convince Tanzania that this virus is present, dangerous and requiring attention.

Obviously, both could be wrong, but knowing what you know about testing, does either sound reasonable?

An average isn't an absolute number.

Project Veritas. Of course, you should reject anything they release, if your handlers tell you to.

The regulations aren't the same all over Germany and have never been. Healthcare is no responsibility of the federal government but of the individual states. Merkel has no power with regard to internal security and related topics. She can only coordinate and make sure needed resources are available. And make sure that economic losses of industries are addressed.

It is obvious that you don't need the same restrictions everywhere at the same time. US states that have not seen lots of infections so far and have no high density areas obviously don't need to perform a shutdown. But they still need to make sure they won't see high numbers in the future. That means building up infrastructure for testing and contact tracing and restricting high contact events (Where lots of people meet in close contact).

What I see from the news is that even US states that still see no stable and lasting decline in new infections are about to release restrictions. And that's certainly a recipe for disaster.

The president of Tanzania is obviously no great fan of science. Given the buying and promtion of snake oil cures. Either this story is invented by him to calm down his population or (more likely) they just bought faulty tests from some overseas fraudster. (Or they have technological problems performing the tests correctly). There were a lot of cases of European countries buying masks or other medical equipment on the international market and then receiving garbage or fakes.

Are you imagining a world where this doesn't spread to everyone?

In a world where vaccines, or mass infection, create 'herd immunity', there could be a 'good time' to release restrictions.

Barring that, there isn't a 'good time', there are only varying shades of 'bad time'.

The tests were 'aid' of some sort, and aid has been a way of fucking over the economically disadvantaged for a long time, so I don't trust their (unnamed) aid source. The President obviously didn't either.

Doesnt' say much about the reality of the testing though. Nor does the recent Project Veritas expose, but with global org's being caught lying about this, it isn't as easy to sort out wheat from chaff.

So are you hoping to keep things closed forever? Or infect everyone carefully enough to minimize fatalities?

Vaccine would obviously be the best answer, but IF they make one, the earliest will be available in 5 to 7 months (which is INCREDIBLE fast work)

If it is more realistic, it will be a year or more before vaccines are available, then some lag beyond that to deliver.

So when should everyone get infected? Or continue to lay low until...until what?

If you have reached a state where you have a low number of infections, the ability to test and trace and a very little number of idiots in the country, you can continue until a vaccine is available without too many restrictions on the economy and individual freedoms and with a low number of new infections. It's basically what South Korea is doing since the beginning and what some European countries like Germany, the Czech Republic, Greece and others may be able to do in the near future.
