It's a shame governments can't get this mobilised when it comes to global warming.

I do kind of agree with this. But one point, it does kill more than the flu.Svartalf wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 10:01 pmI don't quite get why we react to this souped up common cold like it were the plague. Meanwhile, our government, in its great wisdom is virtually shutting the country down, putting tens of thousands of business in jeopardy of not being able to open up again.

I think the kill count goes WAY up when services fall behind. Services like ventilators, or fuel delivery.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 10:39 pmI do kind of agree with this. It's a pandemic. According to the CDC:
Our response does the bulk of the work. I'm with Cunt on this one. I'll likely be just fine, same with my kids, but their grandparents are high-risk so we're avoiding spreading it around.Different parts of the country are seeing different levels of COVID-19 activity. The United States nationally is currently in the initiation phases, but states where community spread is occurring are in the acceleration phase. The duration and severity of each phase can vary depending on the characteristics of the virus and the public health response.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

But it also highlights that governments are willing and able to take action to mitigate a serious and impending threat. All we need to do is make the environmental and climate crisis as real as Covid-19 - which means holding the politicians feet to the fire and keeping the pressure on to make them live up to their own rhetoric.JimC wrote:The whole coronavirus thing is having a major, twofold effect on our response to the climate emergency. First, it makes large protest marches an untenable process, and secondly, it so dominates media discussion that all other issues are sidelined.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Young people can be affected directly from the virus. But more importantly: If there are a lot of cases at the same time, the healthcare system will break and then you or your children could be affected if you have a health problem that can then not be treated effectively.Sean Hayden wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 10:49 pmIt's a pandemic. California gov't asked seniors to self-isolate.
If you know one, maybe offer to shop for them.

You are lucky, to live in such a warm climate. Some of the communities up here don't even have trees to burn.

Just got a text from Bell dot ca, directing me to a site explaining that everything is going to be fine with their service.
I wasn't worried about it before that...but that might be considered 'critical infrastructure'.

I don't know, but I guess the limited immunity the Constitution gives him in the speech and debate clause might be a factor. I sure hope the voters in his district reward him by voting him out of office this fall.Sean Hayden wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 10:31 pmHow is it legal for a congressman to advise the public to do exactly the opposite of what the CDC says we need to do in this situation?Joe wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 9:55 pmI guess someone didn't get the memo.
‘It’s a great time to go out’: California Republican Devin Nunes talks about life amid the coronavirus pandemic
‘If you’re healthy, you and your family, it’s a great time to just go out and go to a local restaurant, likely you can get in easily. ... [G]o to your local pub.’
That’s congressman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on Fox News early Sunday giving a green light to the American people that flies in the face of what experts have been urging.
“Let’s not hurt the working people in this country that are relying on wages and tips to keep their small business going,” Nunes, the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. “So don’t run to the grocery store and buy, you know, $4,000 of food — go to your local pub.”![]()

This is affecting things quickly, and dramatically. I heard that interstate travel in the US may be restricted. All unneeded travel in my area is discouraged.
...and then there is this.
(spoilered because it is upsetting)
