They were allowed to present that image because the media didn't cross certain lines. How do you think Kennedy got his image? That guy was fucking around like a champ. He was banging Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, and other starlets and sharing them with his brother. He fucked an east German spy, among other national security risks. He had hookers brought into the White House, and banged his secretary, and he gave drugs to girls in the White House (amyl nitrate) to see what would happen.

Now, the behaviour of your leaders, and the divisions within your society are something like a historian would expect from an Empire towards the end of its time...

Maybe, but it seems to depend on if the media overall likes the politician or not. There is no "reporting" any longer, or hardly any. It's advocacy. And, what's worse, many of the writers don't even understand that they're doing it, because for so long journalism and news reporting has not attracted the best and brightest. Most of the bylines are nitwits, with nothing that could be considered a classical, liberal arts education. They went to second rate colleges that taught them to memorize new vocabulary words. They weren't taught to think, which is why they almost always get science reporting, and reports on legal issues, wildly wrong. IMO.,

Indeed. Believe it or not, Stalin was wildly popular during his reign too, though not with the several million people he had killed by one means or another. I am not surprised that his popularity is experiencing a resurgence today. Russia has never experienced democracy in its entire history, nor has it ever seen the rise of any influential social strata that value it. Any leader who is seen to protect Mother Russia - no matter how feudal, dictatorial or autocratic - is popular as long as there is no shortage of borscht and vodka, and sometimes not even then. Why would it not admire Putin?
