'Back then' doesn't matter to me as much as the principle that the citizens should be allowed to defend themselves. Since free speech is so lightly defended, I expect that people will defend this one even more.

Almost nobody has, or can get, an assault rifle in the US. Under current law, the only assault rifles that are legal were manufactured before 1986. You have to be eligible to own a firearm generally, live in a state where an assault rifle is legal under state law, and buy one from exclusively from a Class III registered firearms dealer. To get a small assault rifle, the price, if you can get one, is around $12,000 to $16,000. I.e., assault rifles are for all intents and purposes, illegal in the US and have been for decades.

They are expensive and you have to jump through several hoops to get one that you need not jump through to get semi-automatics. Assault-style rifles are not capable of automatic fire, but in all other aspects they are the same. You can snap a large capacity ammo clip into it, attach a pistol grip between the muzzle and the trigger, and if you replace the standard stock with a bump stock it will fire automatically, albeit not with the accuracy of a genuine assault rifle. It's all legal, and requires no jumping through those additional hoops you need to get through on order to buy an actual assault rifle.

Assault style rifles are not favoured by hunters or sport shooters simply because they are not as suited for those pastimes as other models. They are very well suited for killing humans. This is why so many mass shootings are perpetrated with them. Cruz is not the only loon who used one,and he is not the only loon who bought his baby legally.

As I understand the second amendment, everyone is allowed to be armed with whatever is able to defend against government, so, if government has guns that are bigger and bigger, then the citizens can have the same.

My understanding is that when the US Constitution was being discussed the federal government was not meant to have a standing army at all. It was envisaged that in situations where a national military defence force was deemed necessary the federal government would draw its military resources from the various states' militias.

General George Washington soon found out the limitations of state militias. They were undisciplined, badly trained and and impossible to coordinate as a united army. It was reluctantly decided to form a standing federal army in order to defeat the British forces. This was meant to be a temporary, necessary evil. The intention was to dissolve the army once the revolution was one, and indeed, this is what happened by 1791 with the exception of two units. One regiment was retained to guard the western frontier, and one artillery battery the West Point Arsenal.

In this context the Second Amendment made some sense, but the situation did not last long. Before long the federal standing army began growing again for one reason or another. Today, even well regulated militias (or national guards) have a snowflake's chance in hell of baulking a tyrannical US government, and I don't know if many of the former are all that well regulated. That would be the bump-stock. Approx. $400, and not an optimal solution for killing people compared to, say, an M-16 or an AK47.
