More of a personality cult, like a Manson or Koresh, because you didn't have to BELIEVE in Republicanism to vote Trump - and many Republicans disavowed him, and a great many stayed home or voted third-party - you just had to BELIEVE IN TRUMP.
When he said, "
I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters," it not only cast his followers as unthinking idolaters willing to authorise and endorse the most shameful (not to mention illegal) of his acts, but it clearly shows that he thinks of himself as an idol, their idol - their object of worship, their untouchable god. Those who believe, perhaps even fervently, that Trump can do no wrong and, therefore, that everything he does is right, will not worry about his lies, his inconsistencies, his flip-flopping, his reneging, his pussy-grabbing, or his incompetence. They BELIEVE in their idol. He is the light: he is the true path to glory. But that's not the issue. The issue is, does the cult's leader, Trump himself, believe his own mythology, that he can do no wrong and, therefore, that everything he does is right - even standing in the middle of 5th Avenue and letting loose with the uzi?
Donald Trump believes he was born to be King (LA Times, 3 Dec 2016)
