Washington was not at all happy with the foreign policy turn of Erdoğan turning to reconcile with Russia and possibly also with Syria’s Assad.

Doesn't make sense, the CIA would have plotted to push Turkey away from its NATO alliance and into the arms of Russia?
While I can believe that a coup as ludicrously planned and ill executed as this one was intended to fail from day A, putting the CIA, MI6 and mossad behind it, with the expectable result that Turkey would move away from alliance with definitely hostile "friends" and seek new ones just doesn't make sense, unless somebody is looking for a casus belli with turikey, which I won't believe for one moment.

Ergo, I still believe that the whole plot was hatched to give erdogan an excuse to purge those perceived as political enemies.
