Whaaaa? I remember writing something to that extent. Holy deletion of part of your reply, Batman! What I wrote, before I fucked up and erased it, was that the book is basically about how life isn't always nice or interesting, and about the end of childhood and coming to terms with the death of adventure as something that may be around every corner. Fuck, my bad. I really should be more careful to make sure I leave everything that I think I did when I'm composing a reply. :lay:

So you're dismissive of the dismissive because you find the said dismissal, dismissive? I'm not sure what you'd recommend, but I'm not that into the works of Dr. Seuss.

I just happen to find the Catcher in the Rye incredibly boring and uneventful, and Its a little annoying to find that it was crap after all the praise its received. Id read it, and try harder, maybe even finished it one day--but I wont be able to reconcile those lost minutes.

I'll think you'll find many books of a decent quality in that genre, it just so happens that Catcher in the Rye isn't one of them (for me anyway).

Worst pile of shit I ever read in my life. The main character doesn't have one single redeeming feature, and spends the entire book moaning about how shitty everyone else is... because they're exactly like him, but he doesn't see it. He's a complete fucking idiot and he learns nothing by the end of the book, he does not change in the slightest. The only characters in the whole book that are not complete shits are 2 nuns (whom he takes the piss out of for a page & a half) and his little sister who is about 4 and cute and is only in one short scene.
I forced myself to read the whole fucking thing, because it's a classic, right? It must get better!
Bollocks! Now I know why every other pshyco killer always has a dog-eared copy of that book in his pocket when he gets arrested: After reading that putrid piece of wank, I sure as hell wanted to kill someone. Like the author.

I read it when I was about 19. I don't remember a great deal about it but I remember that liked the atmosphere of the book more than anything. I have read a little more Salinger since and it has been OK but nothing Earth-shattering.

I have been meaning to reread Catcher for decades. But there's just so much else I need to read - and so much bollocks I need to post here!! :dono:
