Whaaaa? I remember writing something to that extent. Holy deletion of part of your reply, Batman! What I wrote, before I fucked up and erased it, was that the book is basically about how life isn't always nice or interesting, and about the end of childhood and coming to terms with the death of adventure as something that may be around every corner. Fuck, my bad. I really should be more careful to make sure I leave everything that I think I did when I'm composing a reply. :lay:

I'm astounded at how this can even be considered a classic, let alone a piece literature at all. Its probably the most tedious trash I've ever had to read. I got all the way to chapter 5. I only read it until that chapter because I expected something to actually happen after the first or second chapter but nothing did. I skipped to the last page, where I found some closure. Turns out, nothing happens at all. Its good to know one isn't being presumptuous.

The narrator is supposed to be 16 years old, this doesn't justify the author implementing the word 'goddamn' in every sentence. Its repetitive as well as irritating. Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn could pull it off, and he did--but not J. D. Salinger. Supposedly, this book is supposed to read with a teenage mentality, well I am a teenager and it has to be said that at 16 I could have wrote a book far better than this. And as boring as my life might be at times, its allot more eventful that the protagonists.

I can't stand overrated books, particularly this one. I've put it where it rightfully belongs (next to the Kite Runner).

Wow.

Your opinions on the subject of literature are just fucking worthless if you are this dismissive of The Catcher In The Rye. Maybe you'd like something with more explosions, bad diologue, and 2D, boring, sterotypical characters. For you, I reccomend anything by this guy:

So you're dismissive of the dismissive because you find the said dismissal, dismissive? I'm not sure what you'd recommend, but I'm not that into the works of Dr. Seuss.

I just happen to find the Catcher in the Rye incredibly boring and uneventful, and Its a little annoying to find that it was crap after all the praise its received. Id read it, and try harder, maybe even finished it one day--but I wont be able to reconcile those lost minutes.

I'll think you'll find many books of a decent quality in that genre, it just so happens that Catcher in the Rye isn't one of them (for me anyway).

Worst pile of shit I ever read in my life. The main character doesn't have one single redeeming feature, and spends the entire book moaning about how shitty everyone else is... because they're exactly like him, but he doesn't see it. He's a complete fucking idiot and he learns nothing by the end of the book, he does not change in the slightest. The only characters in the whole book that are not complete shits are 2 nuns (whom he takes the piss out of for a page & a half) and his little sister who is about 4 and cute and is only in one short scene.
I forced myself to read the whole fucking thing, because it's a classic, right? It must get better!
Bollocks! Now I know why every other pshyco killer always has a dog-eared copy of that book in his pocket when he gets arrested: After reading that putrid piece of wank, I sure as hell wanted to kill someone. Like the author.
BTW, is that cunt still alive? I have a bone to pick with him.

Back on topic, and Catcher in the Rye is not a book I'm inclined to read any time soon as I have stacks of other books higher up my list of must reads ... So many books, so little time ...

It's a very short book... :dono:

I read it when I was about 19. I don't remember a great deal about it but I remember that liked the atmosphere of the book more than anything. I have read a little more Salinger since and it has been OK but nothing Earth-shattering.

I have been meaning to reread Catcher for decades. But there's just so much else I need to read - and so much bollocks I need to post here!! :dono:

Wow.
That is cos Huck is a stone cold cool motherfucker, whereas Holden is an arsehole. (Or, as he might whinge himself - a "phony").

Huck on the other hand smokes corncob pipes, has a bowie knife, explores caves, helps slaves to escape, and lives in an empty barrel.

(Remember what other famous person in history lived in a barrel?)

It was hard to pinpoint a single point that the book was trying to make, and you have to get into analyzing imagery and word choice and such, all of which makes it too much work, IMO. It was a worthwhile read for me, but nothing I'd rave about, exactly.
Like Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake by Joyce. Utter bollox.

His earlier stuff was excellent, but then his ego masturbation took over, and he began to write fuck all.

He's just asking to have the piss taken out of his review. If you read my response again, you'll notice that I was attacking lozzer's opinion, not lozzer himself.
