Bordeaux produces SUPERIOR reds (as well as some shit ones, and everything in between). It also produces some very nice whites. And some shit ones, and everything in between.
I'll need your expertise, because I never found the nice ones in white. Guess I've been spoiled by the good stuff.
I wouldn't call it "expertise" - just a few simple guidelines:
1. Avoid flashy labels. Winemaking is a traditional business. Boring labels usually indicate an established winemaker. They have the experience and the vines.
2. "La Beaujolais Neuveau est arrivee" (Translation: It is now safe to start drinking last year's wines)
3. Avoid Italian whites, unless you know what you're looking for.
4. Keep an eye out for special offers.
May I suggest Calvet? A Bordeaux winemaker which produces some very nice reds and whites, mostly reasonably priced.
