Believe me, when I get drunk enough to enjoy bad plonk, more than just wine has generally been recently involved.
I choose to drink this wine not because it is easy but because it is hard

Mortification of the flesh and all that? Carry on, now I'll be back to my bum wine and pretend it's 15 yr old tawny port...

Bordeaux produces SUPERIOR reds (as well as some shit ones, and everything in between). It also produces some very nice whites. And some shit ones, and everything in between.
I'll need your expertise, because I never found the nice ones in white. Guess I've been spoiled by the good stuff.
I wouldn't call it "expertise" - just a few simple guidelines:

1. Avoid flashy labels. Winemaking is a traditional business. Boring labels usually indicate an established winemaker. They have the experience and the vines.
2. "La Beaujolais Neuveau est arrivee" (Translation: It is now safe to start drinking last year's wines)
3. Avoid Italian whites, unless you know what you're looking for.
4. Keep an eye out for special offers.

May I suggest Calvet? A Bordeaux winemaker which produces some very nice reds and whites, mostly reasonably priced.

When I was in Paris a few years back I searched for a good wine, at a fair price. Could not find anything. Maybe if I was prepared to pay $100 plus per bottle ...

At home I drink $12 Aussi shiraz and equivalently priced NZ cabernet sauvignon. Both make the French wine taste like utter plonk.

Some South American, South African, and Californian wines are pretty good at a reasonable price. But French wines you can have.

Did no one come up with "Englance"? A tad more elegant than Franglaterre, which frankly sounds like some kind of almond cake.

If they had built a tunnel that you could drive through, for free, it might have helped with some sort of unity.
But getting on a ferry, or getting on a train. What's the difference? Not a lot.

Anyway, we couldn't persuade Ireland to stay, and a third of Scotland wants to go, so I would say that we would have split by now, anyway.

And wanna know what my favourite wine is?
The cheapest. There's hardly any difference. It's just fuckin wine.
