... Turchin has found what he believes to be historical cycles, two to three centuries long, of political instability and breakdown affecting states and empires from Rome to Russia. In a book he is finishing, he argues that similar cycles are evident in US history, and that they are playing out to this day. ...

In this particular case, 6% of the poll respondents say they voted for someone other than Obama or Romney in the latest presidential election, so the poll may have some sampling issue.Coito ergo sum wrote:If Fox News quotes a poll, the poll becomes invalid.subversive science wrote:Even Fox News was quoting the new polls today. I wonder why? Oh yes, they're joint NBC/WSJ polls, the latter of which is now an extension of Fox News.

One of the problems with the logic laid out in the article you quoted is that wealth and income inequality was extremely high at their starting point in 1930, and it's not higher now. That would suggest an 80 year cycle rather than a 300 year cycle.Scrumple wrote:I wish they'd put some data on the bones cos it does sound like Eliot wave mumbo jumbo sprung to life after the shit happens doesn't it?Warren Dew wrote:Turchin argues that cycles three centuries long are evident in US history? Of course, the article may be totally misrepresenting Turchin's actual position.

US borrowing crisis 'days away' from danger, says World Bank head
The president of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, has warned that the United States is just "days away from a very dangerous moment" because of the government's borrowing crisis.
He urged US policymakers to reach a deal to raise the government's debt ceiling before Thursday's deadline.
The US Treasury will start to run short of funds if no agreement is reached for it to borrow on financial markets.
Mr Kim warned this could be a "disastrous event" for the world.
"The closer we get to the deadline the greater the impact will be for the developing world.

Re: Obama slams Republicans for threat to blow up entire eco
Reagan and pals have started the time bomb ticking in 1980. They actually gave all the money to the rich and upper middle class, instead of paying off debt. Obamacare is peanuts compared to 30 years of forcing money on the rich. They were too polite to give it back.

revenue at 20-25% of GDP would allow us to pay off the debt AND medicate the poor

And your graph shows that even taxing the "rich" at 90% would fail to raise revenue above 20%.Tero wrote:revenue at 20-25% of GDP would allow us to pay off the debt AND medicate the poor
The only way actually to raise revenue is to increase tax rates on the poor and middle class, for example by increasing social security taxes. Do you like that solution?

Yes, raise the taxes on the middle classes, until we have paid off Reagan-Bush gift to American people.
No sense taxing the poor, we would need to house them in barracks and feed them anyway. I

Clean slate. Dissolve the Union. Parts of the States that are functional economically and socially will thrive and can have their own currencies, develop their own peoples.

Fuck all y'all fucking ingrates with your fucking hands out. You denigrate the US and then get all upset because it happens to be true that we're the economic engine of the world and you're pissing your collective pants at the prospect that we might tell all y'all to go fuck yourselves and repudiate our debts.Scrumple wrote:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24511283

World prepares for U.S. debt default
Without a budget in place, the US government has run out of the cash needed to pay thousands of government workers in Washington and keep national parks open. But this week an even more critical issue comes to the fore. On Thursday, the country will be forced to default on its $16.8 trillion in borrowings if it does not secure a rise in the debt ceiling.
