I lost the link, but there's some analysis that suggests that Korean culture may have played a part in the (lack of) cockpit communication in those last few troubled minutes. The less-experienced flight trainer maybe being uncomfortable with communicating trouble to the more experienced pilot. Not sure, but it has happened before with KAL.
Then again, the pilots' own reporting is that they set the instruments as per protocol, but the instruments failed to perform as designed. Again, not sure.
