Prison meat supplier suspended over 'non-halal meat' fears

A meat supplier to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been suspended after tests found that it may have supplied Halal products to prisons which contained traces of non-Halal meat.

The MoJ said pies and pasties from the unnamed Halal-certified supplier, have been withdrawn and the issue reported to the Food Standards Agency.

Justice minister Jeremy Wright said the incident was "absolutely unacceptable".

Halal meat has been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic dietary laws.

Traditionally, the animal is killed by hand and must be blessed by the person who has slaughtered the animal, but some Muslims say a mechanised form is also now acceptable.

In a statement, Mr Wright said the Prison Service were investigating the incident "as a matter of urgency".

He added: "This is an absolutely unacceptable situation and one which we regret greatly.

"Clearly this must be distressing for those affected and they can be reassured we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation."
