Far more interested in what the Chinese are doing, the real test of whether you can make a decent tank, aircraft or sub is whether you can make a laptop, tv or consumer electronics that people would actually buy. Something the Chinese certainly can do

The Chinese are also becoming quite scary. Resource tensions are becoming a source of policy change that may drive China into an expansionist mode. We may already be seeing some of this.

Aye. Article in the Grauniad earlier this week highlighting how Japan and China are investing heavily in drones and predicting some kind of robotic confrontation over some of the contested islands.

And then there's their behaviour in Africa. And they seem to have lots of border disputes these days.

Not too worried about the Chinese, its a bit hard to sell lots of stuff to people if at the same time you are bombing your customers

The Chinese don't necessarily work that way.
And, in any case, they'd be more concerned about selling to Europe and the USA, as opposed to their nearest neighbours.

And who knows what their actual defence budget is. It is certainly more than they pretend it is.
