BTW, she's a damn fool for carrying the money around, of course. She couldn't defend her life savings, but she thought they were safer with her than in a bank. Old fool needed someone to make decisions for her.

Old fools are notoriously pigheaded IME. If you push too hard they start resenting you and probably do what you're warning against just to spite you. A lot like teenagers I imagine.

My mom was well into ALZ when she left here. I survived nearly three years with her.

I cannot judge her too harshly for distrusting bankers though. She merely took a good instinct too far.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
