It's your duty as a citizen to fight unjust, unfair or unreasonable taxes.JacksSmirkingRevenge wrote:Depends what the taxes are used for.

I don't see them as dues so much as a contribution to the welfare of society as a whole. Of course one can debate what the taxes are used for (I'd scrap our nuclear deterrent tomorrow for example..).

It's pay-to-play, IMHO.Rum wrote:I don't see them as dues so much as a contribution to the welfare of society as a whole. Of course one can debate what the taxes are used for (I'd scrap our nuclear deterrent tomorrow for example..).

Re: Agree or disagree?
I think it is mutually beneficial. The taxes I pay are spent on things I couldn't possibly afford to purchase - even if it was collectively with some sort of consortium.
Even tax paid on welfare (a big chunk here) is beneficial to me in my view. Without it the people who have fallen by the wayside of capitalisms labour system, whether involuntarily or otherwise, would be rioting on the streets or burgling my house to feed themselves. They are better off and I and mine are safer. Of course I would prefer it if they were working, but the fact is that capitalism is quite rapidly making the acquirement for mass labour redundant.

Taxation is the price of civilisation, without it 99% of us would be dead

Actually, I am with Rum here, and I am getting more socialist the older I get, and the more I see. Pure capitalism is as much an unachievable ideal as communism ever was.

Re: Agree or disagree?
Imo, taxes are nothing more than a) pooling resources, and b) structured, institutionalized altruism. I think much of the objection to taxation is the idea that it's forced, involuntary, unfairly distributed altruism.
It isn't so much that it's a price enacted by society as it is an expression of our biological nature. It's who we are as a social species.

Could be. All I know for sure is that the US sure hasn't achieved it yet.MiM wrote:Actually, I am with Rum here, and I am getting more socialist the older I get, and the more I see. Pure capitalism is as much an unachievable ideal as communism ever was.

Re: Agree or disagree?
Agreed although i think what our taxes are spent on should be more rigorously scrutinized and less emphasis on tax cuts and military spending and more on services and infrastructure.
