Re: A rational religion...?
Is Buddhism actually a religion?
It's funny and strange.
That the less like a religion you get, the more rational it seems.
So the Dalai Lama, when he's gone as far as Buddhism can take him, should maybe go to the next level.
And give up the bollocks altogether.

Pretty much every religion with a central authority figure - Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed...FBM wrote:Who makes that claim?amused wrote:I don't understand this assumption that because somebody who was apparently famous a long time ago, then what they have to say about how to live a human life, is inherently valuable.

Re: A rational religion...?
I don't see the claim that because they were famous long ago we should pay attention to them now. Jeebus and Mohammed allegedly had Divine Revelation as the justification for paying attention to them. The Buddha had a mind-training program that worked for a lot of people to relieve their existential anxieties. I've never heard anybody say we should pay attention to any of them just because they were famous long ago.amused wrote:Pretty much every religion with a central authority figure - Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed...FBM wrote:Who makes that claim?amused wrote:I don't understand this assumption that because somebody who was apparently famous a long time ago, then what they have to say about how to live a human life, is inherently valuable.

"What a bunch of hooey."
I find it astonishing that someone with such deficient knowledge of Hindu traditions feels competent to speak on what the Buddha did to the assumptions of those traditions. Not surprising for an FBM.
The more I learn of Buddhists and Buddhism, the more I find to hate.

Unlike some people, I readily admit to having limits to my understanding. Now that you've got the snarky, emotive response out of you, do you have anything substantial to add? Or shall we all just bow down andrasetsu wrote:"What a bunch of hooey."

Ah. I was hoping you actually knew what you were talking about. Looks like you're just covering, after all. Nvm, I'll just go back to reading books by people who do know what they're talking about.

I'll admit to a certain curiosity as to why you tend to single me out for animosity. To the best of my memory, I never said anything negative to or about you before your first attack. But I don't really care that much. You've shown that you have little more than C&P skills. I'm disappointed, but I no longer think I have anything to learn from you. You had me going for a while, though. But not I think you're just another internet narcissist who sees every discussion as a contest for intellectual supremacy and spends more time on honing one-upsmanship skills than acumen. If that weren't the case, you'd have engaged me with something intellectually substantial instead of adolescent foot-stamping and name-calling. But your apparent personality problem is yours to solve, not mine. Goodbye.

I think St. Augustine said something about if evidence shows a story in the Old Testament to be implausible we must look to it as allegory. It's what the Catholic Church still believe. Curiously this doesn't apply to the New Testament so while they don't believe the fantastic tales of the OT as historical fact the bit with a man coming back from the dead - that happened.

Yep. Biblical literalism is a comparatively new phenomenon. Now 'can't see the wood for the trees' theology is somewhat standard in some places... Weird when you consider D.F.Strauss in Leben Jesu pretty much kicked NT literalism into touch in the 1850s....Animavore wrote:I think St. Augustine said something about if evidence shows a story in the Old Testament to be implausible we must look to it as allegory.
