Every western nation except the USA, has a major restriction on owning and carrying firearms, and especially hand guns. End result is that only the USA has a homicide rate more than 4 per 100,000 people per year, unless you want to count Afghanistan, Russia and a bunch of third world nations.

So the idea that owning guns reduces shootings is shown to be bullshit. Your logic is like saying that we can reduce graffiti by giving out spray cans of paint to all teenagers. Yeah, riiiight!

and I disagree with those countries, yes, that includes my own.

Seriously, even if I don't really need one, I'd rather have access to the hardware, since a) crimminals have it anyway and b) the police is not trustworthy when it comes to intervening in a pinch (minutes to respond, if not hours, when trouble is seconds away) (and our peelers are usually morons, power trippers, corrupt, or any combo of the three).
It may not be an actual safety need, but it would be a plus since you don't know if nor when a fluke might not happen.

First, most criminals in western nations outside the USA do not have hand guns.
Second, if the police are inadequate, then reform the police. It can be done. Just requires the will. If the French are too gutless to kick their gendarmerie in the ass, then that is their problem.

Making guns widely available just increases the number of tragedies.

60 (or whatever) % of suicides may be by gun, but 100% of them are by themselves. Maybe we should first outlaw being oneself. Or nip it in the bud by making it illegal to be suicidal. :ddpan:

Making guns illegal in a country where criminals have easy access to them just concentrates the tragedies on the law-abiding citizen-victims, minus the odd accident in which a criminal hurts himself or another criminal.

The logical conclusion of that is that everybody should have a small machine gun at home, since it's more effective than a pistol.

I think that's right. In fact, I think every American should carry a machine gun at all times. They would then be ready to defend themselves and others from attack.

And a video camera too.
Youtube would be all the better for it.

I'm glad to hear it. The more machine guns about, the safer it will become.
They've proved it in Afghanistan.

Just so long as I'm not going there, it's fine.

Ha !.
That cannot possibly be true, because without religion, how can you possibly know right from wrong?
You're therefore highly likely to start spraying bullets around at any time, just to feed your sick atheist sense of humour.

Only the bible can possibly stop you. Repent, brother, and give your soul to the Lord !!

Given that God doesn't seem to know right from wrong I find your objection objectionable.

Atheist fool !
Don't you know, he moves in mysterious ways ??

So, you objecting to my objectionable objection is hardly objective.

The object of my objection was that the object you think I find objectionable is, in point of fact, the objective of my scorn.

Ahem .

I think you'll find you mean the "object" of my scorn.
In proper English, that is.

Have you finished with our tea, by the way? That invoice is still outstanding.
