Aurora

Post by Thinking Aloud » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:01 am

A couple of pictures from last night - after an alert at about 10pm, and spotting a greenish glow to the north, the alarm clock was set for 1am.

The long exposure makes the aurora brighter in the photos than it appeared in the sky, however it was clearly visible.

From outside the house (composite):

At the stone circle (composite):

And then the camera battery died, just as the curl to the right folded around on itself, making a superb 'curtain' up into the heavens! By the time I got home it was starting to fade, however it was pulsing with waves of light that were rising quickly up into the sky across its whole length - spectacular - and not something I've witnessed before.

Activity is still quite high, and it's past midnight across the US just now, so if you're in a highish latitude and still awake, go and have a look!

:this: and then some. I envy you, TA. Did you have to drive away from the city to get those?

The top was taken fifty yards from my front door, in town; the other was from the stone circle I cycle to every day - about 5 minutes drive and a quick jog. It's the most dramatic display I've seen here for many years.

:derp: I guess if I'd looked down, I would've seen the town. :hehe: I wish I lived where the light pollution was as unobstructive.

This was last night's graph:

I'll be keeping an eye on it for this evening - we're lucky in that the detector Lancaster University use is just 16 miles from here, in Aberdeenshire, so it's a pretty good indicator!
