Saddam's WMD's are in Syria
Saddam's WMD's are in Syria
Washington Post reporter Joby Warrick reports that western intelligence agencies suspect that the Syrian government is hiding hundreds of tons of chemical weapons and precursor chemicals in as many as 20 sites. Stockpiles may include battle-ready Sarin. The story says "Syria is thought to possess the world's third-largest stockpile of chemical weapons after the United States and Russia, whose Cold War arsenals are being dismantled and destroyed."
Guess where a bunch of those WMD's came from.
Iraq, just prior to the resumption of hostilities caused by Saddam's refusal to abide by the terms of the cease-fire agreement and his obstruction of UN weapons inspectors.
Tens of thousands of Sarin and Mustard Gas filled artillery shells and other chemical weapons (possibly including biological weapons) were shipped out of Iraq just before the invasion in a series of 747 flights and truck convoys to Syria, disguised as "earthquake relief" shipments, according to Saddam's Air Vice-Marshal Georges Sada. The UK's Daily Mail reporter Melanie Phillips outlines the scheme in this article.
Which is why those known-to-exist WMD's were not found when the US defeated Saddam and went looking for them.
Which means, among other things, that our invasion of Iraq on the basis that Saddam was holding undeclared WMD's after the Gulf War cease fire was perfectly correct and legitimate.

As military analysts and anyone living in Israel can tell you, Syria has had large stockpiles of declared chemical weapons for decades.Seth wrote:Which means, among other things, that our invasion of Iraq on the basis that Saddam was holding undeclared WMD's after the Gulf War cease fire was perfectly correct and legitimate.
So, if (and it's still an if, sorry Seth) the existence of chemical munitions in Iraq justified the invasion, why hasn't anyone invaded Syria yet?

Because Syria hasn't invaded Kuwait, been defeated, signed a cease-fire agreement, violated that agreement immediately, violated 14 UN agreements, and refused to stop being belligerent and supporting international terrorism for a dozen years.Ian wrote:As military analysts and anyone living in Israel can tell you, Syria has had large stockpiles of declared chemical weapons for decades.Seth wrote:Which means, among other things, that our invasion of Iraq on the basis that Saddam was holding undeclared WMD's after the Gulf War cease fire was perfectly correct and legitimate.

I was in favor of invading Syria way back when based on the same criteria.
But that's not the point, the point is that Saddam's WMD's exist, and have existed since the early 80's, it's just that they were moved to Syria before we got to Baghdad the second time and found that fuck living in a hole in the ground.
I'm just kicking the shit out of the "unjustified war" claim that all the liberals have been trumpeting all this time.

Guess what? It was still unjustified.

"THOUGHT to possess",is a long way from "is KNOWN to possess". Besides, isn't Iran next on the list? The story says "Syria is thought to possess the world's third-largest stockpile of chemical weapons after the United States and Russia, whose Cold War arsenals are being dismantled and destroyed."
I was going to say "surely the American public is not stupid enough to fall for that twice". Then I remembered this is the country which elected GWB,twice (I won't start on the current Republican candidates)

I was in favor of invading Syria way back when based on the same criteria.
Under the Nuremberg principles used to try Nazi war criminals, Bush and "the coalition of the willing" Could all be tried as war criminals for the invasion of Iraq. I think they should be. Chance would be a fine thing..

Re: Saddam's WMD's are in Syria
I certainly hope so. However, I note that several months ago an installation was photographed by satellite in Syria that was alleged to be a nuclear research facility, and within a few weeks it had disappeared utterly, before UN inspectors could get permission to visit the site.padraic wrote:"THOUGHT to possess",is a long way from "is KNOWN to possess". Strange how the Coalition was made up of more than just the US, even though we bore the lion's share of the load. Perhaps we should let Iran get the bomb and use it on Paris or London and then sit back and say "We told you so..."I was going to say "surely the American public is not stupid enough to fall for that twice". Hardly. The first Gulf War was a NATO response to the invasion of Kuwait, and the 2nd invasion was a restoration of hostilities after Saddam repeatedly and egregiously violated the terms of the cease-fire agreement Saddam signed. Perfectly justifiable under the Nuremburg and Geneva Conventions.
Under the Nuremberg principles used to try Nazi war criminals, Bush and "the coalition of the willing" Could all be tried as war criminals for the invasion of Iraq. I think they should be. Chance would be a fine thing..
Problem is, Saddam was responsible for planning, preparing for, initiating and waging war on Kuwait. Everything that followed was completely in accord with international law as a defensive and retaliatory war against his initial aggression.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

And Syria is a known haven for international terrorism, which makes it a rogue state, which justifies invading it precisely because it has WMD's that it can distribute to the terrorists it supports and harbors.
Nice try though.

Probably got them from Syria in the first place, but could have manufactured them himself back in the 80s, when he used them on the Kurds to kill 100,000+ people.Cormac wrote:Where'd he get those WMDs by the way?Seth wrote:Because Syria hasn't invaded Kuwait, been defeated, signed a cease-fire agreement, violated that agreement immediately, violated 14 UN agreements, and refused to stop being belligerent and supporting international terrorism for a dozen years.Ian wrote:As military analysts and anyone living in Israel can tell you, Syria has had large stockpiles of declared chemical weapons for decades.Seth wrote:Which means, among other things, that our invasion of Iraq on the basis that Saddam was holding undeclared WMD's after the Gulf War cease fire was perfectly correct and legitimate.

When do you think we should invade Russia?
After all, they possess WMDs. They kill dissidents. They have oil. They sell weapons technology to other nations.
Can we do a ten-thirty next Wednesday? How does that fit your schedule?

I vote N. Korea. They have WMDs AND nukes, but since they don't have oil, it'll never happen.Thumpalumpacus wrote:When do you think we should invade Russia?
