I was being generous with my comment of "some" success. They've certainly got an easier task trying to keep out guns there than they would here! Millions of tons of drugs, and millions of illegal immigrants make it across the Mexican border every year, yet small, easily concealable handguns would never find their way in to the country if we made them illegal.Svartalf wrote:Uh, Wumbo? I mean, take a small island where guns have been forbidden for even longer than in Britain... Do you know how many of them the IRA smuggled in? Do you know that Roger casement enlisted German aid to smuggle enough rifles to arm a regiment in a single shipment (not to mention 10 machineguns and the ammo to use all those pieces)...

I would also comment to Wumbo, who seems to believe it is impossible to keep guns out, that the nations in Europe have even more borders with other states than the USA has, including countries like Kosovo where not just guns, but open warfare has been a factor in recent history.
Yet they keep illegal guns in low numbers. It can be done. It just takes the will.

The will and maybe a very ruthless approach to taxation to make sure you have the personnel and materiel to enforce the will.

Maybe. But we don't have "the will". Or more accurately, we don't have the desire. We like our guns, sorry about that. I realize that many of you ferriners don't understand that, and that's OK. I don't understand a lot of what y'all do, and I lived overseas for most of my adult life. Probably a good thing they don't have concealed carry in the UK, because I'd have nailed at least two shit-sucking punk muggers all by myself. Only place I've ever been mugged, and I've lived in fucking Johannesburg and Lagos. So don't talk to me about how "safe" the UK is, it's like goddamned Mad Max over there. People too shit scared to protect themselves from drug and drink addled punks. Funny, that's never happened to me in the U.S. despite the number of guns in circulation. To me, 8000 gun homicides is acceptable, particularly since the majority of those will be gang related. I honestly do not care how many gangbangers pop caps in each other's asses. The more the merrier, IMO, less trash for the criminal justice system to deal with.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

This to me is a very honest reply. If the majority of people in the US like their current gun laws, and are happy to accept the increased number of homicides that are one of the consequences, then fair enough...laklak wrote:Maybe. Thing is, it's been proven by history, particularly US history of the last 25 years, that less guns (in the hands of law abiding citizens) means more crime, and more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens means less crime. The facts are not in dispute. In every state where concealed carry has been legalized in the last 25 years, violent crime rates have DROPPED substantially and have stayed below pre-CCW levelsJimC wrote:This to me is a very honest reply. We understand that by trying to take guns from the law abiding all that is accomplished is that criminals have more unarmed victims to prey upon, as they do in the UK, which is a far more violent society overall than even the worst of our metropolitan areas, not to mention our suburban and rural areas which are really quite peaceful in large part BECAUSE people have guns and criminals know it.
So yes, 8000 gun-related homicides a year are acceptable because the number would triple, quadruple or go even higher if the people were disarmed. And that completely ignores the other function of an armed citizenry, which is to prevent or ultimately rectify tyranny.

So then, you would be saying that if the US moved to have similar gun laws as the rest of the world, its inherent lawlessness would make its homicide rate vastly higher than any other civilised country.
Interesting view you have of your own country...
And, for the record, I believe it would be impossible, for many reasons, to wean you guys away from your guns anyway...
So do carry on...

Many US posters, on the other hand, were arguing that BG could not possibly be right in analysing the consequences of your gun situation. If you accept that increased homicide rates are a consequence, but still want to keep the gun status quo, then fair enough - its always been up to Americans to make that decision through the democratic process.
As long as no one is pretending there are no consequences...

The political will to remove currently legally owned firearms from the US populace would not only be political suicide, it would itself result in armed resistance and loss of life. It just can't be done atm. OTOH, the political will to intensify the focus on removing illegally owned firearms wouldn't meet any opposition at all, I think.

Re: Bang, Bang, Yer Dead!
I think it actually would. The NRA would probably counter it with the slippery slope logic they like to use, and a lot of right-wing types would buy into it. "First they want to verify that everyone's guns are legal, then they'll want tighter restrictions on who gets to own them, then they'll restrict certain types which can be sold, etc..."FBM wrote:OTOH, the political will to intensify the focus on removing illegally owned firearms wouldn't meet any opposition at all, I think.
Maybe I've become cynical lately, but there really is a certain "dumb as we wanna be" pride to be found.
