I think the church will be surprised by how little anyone really cares any more. Sure they'll get some old bag with a placard to monkey hoot the same nonsense, but there is so many openly gay people in Scotland that it seems incomprehensible to me that anyone but the tiny minority of Arch-bigots gives a shit. I don't know what they are thinking. There is a particularly low rent area near me that is considerably "catholic" by tradition. It's a rough fucking area too, but the local greasy spoon, which is popular with the industrial workers and greedy bastards like myself. One of the young chaps in there is camper than big bird in a bra and panties. No one gives him shit or cares. The boozer up the road from it has a lounge which is a hangout for a lot of gay folk in the area and the bar is like something out the wild west. I don't hear of much hassle other than the standard drunken twattery that happens from time to time.

In short, if even the most pig ignorant casual bigots have little issue with homosexuality, I think the Catholic church is in for a fail. Especially since even amongst Catholics they see their authority as morally bankrupt child fuckers.

Yeas Audrey, and yet the special, steaming arrogance of religionists will no doubt see the Catholic Orkbishops claiming that it is society which is out-of-step and not themselves.

Hey Brian, you forget that for 2000 years, it's been the Church's job to set morality standards and rules when the actual society didn't measure up.

Never got why the Celts and the Norse were silly enough to convert without being forced to at swordpoint.

For a wee country, it's a pretty varied country, Audley, and I've no doubt your description is apt for a number of areas Scotland. I hope you're right, but I'm not convinced. We'll see. Lots of people, even in areas like the one you describe, don't go into the pub. They maybe don't go to the church either, but - and this is why, despite Svarty's admonition, I stick to my word - they still have a tradition of adhering to the kinds of assumptions they or their parents held before Catholicism became less important to them. I'm certainly not saying that's right, nor am I disagreeing with your point about "morally bankrupt child fuckers"; I'm just saying I can see why the SNP want to be a bit careful about this.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Catholic Church has every right not to marry gay couples in its own churches, with a priest officiating...

Bu the arrogant arseholes want their narrow views to apply to all!

I still get emails from my old parish with the latest news and so on - there were a few on this topic. I think if I'd not already excommunicated the church of my own volition, I'd probably have done so in light of everything in the last few years (believer or no).

Oh I've been all over and yes there are places in Scotland which are drowning in bigotry and tradition, from overspill estates untouched by anything but incest and alcoholism, to those small towns and villages filled with the narrow minded PLU brigades. Hardcore protestant dickheads are as likely to be horrified by gay marriage too. However they are on the margins. I genuinely think that on this issue Scotland is pretty cool. Certainly I've heard of wee fuds hassling gay boys, but they're wee fuds, they hassle everyone.

I know why Salmond is being careful, its the fundamental problem people have with all politicians, do nothing that might cost votes, but you can't please everyone and if Salmond has any plans at all for an vote of confidence for an independent Scotland he and his party need to be more bold in such regard.

Our prime bigotry is sectarianism, then followed by anti-english sports commentator hatred. I've never known Scotland as being particularly intolerant of much else because those two take up so much of the time of bigots.

When civil partnerships were created the christian lobby protest barely made in into double figures outside Westminster
