Oh I've been all over and yes there are places in Scotland which are drowning in bigotry and tradition, from overspill estates untouched by anything but incest and alcoholism, to those small towns and villages filled with the narrow minded PLU brigades. Hardcore protestant dickheads are as likely to be horrified by gay marriage too. However they are on the margins. I genuinely think that on this issue Scotland is pretty cool. Certainly I've heard of wee fuds hassling gay boys, but they're wee fuds, they hassle everyone.John_fi_Skye wrote:For a wee country, it's a pretty varied country, Audley, and I've no doubt your description is apt for a number of areas Scotland. I hope you're right, but I'm not convinced. We'll see. Lots of people, even in areas like the one you describe, don't go into the pub. They maybe don't go to the church either, but - and this is why, despite Svarty's admonition, I stick to my word - they still have a tradition of adhering to the kinds of assumptions they or their parents held before Catholicism became less important to them. I'm certainly not saying that's right, nor am I disagreeing with your point about "morally bankrupt child fuckers"; I'm just saying I can see why the SNP want to be a bit careful about this.
