Funny story. When I was in the class the NROTC had for Naval History* I was asked by the instructor what the name of that religion was. I said it, pronouncing it exactly like I had been taught. He stopped for a moment and then quietly asked "And how do you spell that, please?"

What the constitution actually says is:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

I think the law is very much in accord with both the spirit and the letter of the constitution. If anything, funding only secular nonreligious schools could be interpreted as violating the spirit of the second clause, as that restricts free exercise of religion.
