The Swedish Miracle.
There was a report on Radio 4 about the "Swedish Miracle" (no, it's not some kind of performance-enhancing contraption). In the 80s, Sweden was rocked by an economic crisis and this led to the implementation of various new policies. Sweden remains a high tax economy. If you chop down some trees on your property to get a better view of the lake, the Govt will
tax you more, because you have a nice view. Very invasive but no-one seems to mind much. These policies have led to Sweden now having the most competitive economy in Europe and they are running a budget surplus. Generous welfare provisions have been maintained and Sweden regularly comes near the top of the best places to live. Other Govts in Europe have beaten a path to the Swedes door to see how they have done it, including the current British one.
More Swedishness, that's the ticket!
