He was off duty there. Usually, he went with the military uniform.

That
is his military uniform. Ever seen him with epaulettes, sashes, braids and enough medals to blind anyone within 50 metres?

I was going to say that the buttons and pocket design on the previous picture were definitely marking the jacket as military in cut, if not outright part of an established uniform.
Is it just me or is the picture of Adolf in full regalia with cap a late in the war propaganda shot? He looks much older than in the other two.
and Stalin is a generalissimo (he WAS a field marshal of the Red Army before 1924 wasn't he?) though I'm not sure he did earn all the medals
Bongo is either a generalissimo or a special design medal rack
and gagaffi is the special design eyesore.

Obviously not a real dictator, then. He probably got his position through some democratic process, rather than seizing it by force like any self respecting tyrant.

Maybe that's what you think. I merely pointed out that none of the stereotypical appearance and garb Coito listed seem to fit in this case.

Maybe your first picture fits into Coito's definition of a Nehru jacket? That seems to be the category that would include a Mao jacket.
Edit: I have to point out Qadafi did take control through a military coup, though, so his uniform wearing is arguably legitimate.

You're supposed to focus on the medals, epaulettes, sashes and so on.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I'm betting no later than 1941 or so.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

He took over a whole country! That's got to be worth a few medals.
I do wonder what the star of David was awarded for, though.

If you are refering to stalin it isn't a star of david its a red star or derivatives of thereof.
